Gay marriage, your thoughts?
With the pope on his possible death bed I wonder how many popes away we are till gays are christinelly(is that a word) accepted I say 6.
It depends on the Pope, Smokinjoe. What traditionally happens in the church is that not much changes, then a puff of white smoke goes up and things change massively in the next five years.
Popes are, oddly enough, people. They have their pet prjoects. The Catholic Church is, like any large organisation, political.
I think the next pope will lean towards liberalisation of birth control and concentrate on fighting poverty in the developing world. The Vatican will become silent on the issue of gay marriage. You might see priests allowed to marry under special circumstances too, but that's a long shot.
Shouldn't make the rules if ya can't play the game...
When it comes to gay marrage and the right to be married is something I would like to see what the voting public vote on and as a nation we decide. This is such a sencitive subject that people can rant and rave for hours on end about who is right and who is wrong. The bottom line is that we are a democratic country and we need to have a national vote on these sencitive issues. Not because our elected represenitives can't depbate this on there own but because it is what the definition of democracy requires from the citizens of that country. ESPESUALY with such sencitive issues. Every voice needs to be heard. If they aren't then we have failed. As a concervitive I feel that gay marage is only right under the CANADIAN constitution. Maybe not under YOU PERSONAL interpretaion of the constitution. Although it is unconstitutional to force a priest/ pastor/ rabi/ etc. to perform these civil duties. If they so choose to do so, that is the fredom of choice that is given to them as a CANADIAN.
I AM CANADIAN

I really don't care that much. The pro gay marriage has some LOGICAL arguments like encouraging monogamy amoungst homosexuals in order to help prevent AIDS. The anti-gay marriage side just says its wrong and bad for society without any proof. So I'll back the pro side; I have no 'moral' opinion on this one.

I think the whole issue is stupid. I am a straight, Catholic girl living in Jesusland....I know here in the US it seems to be mostly a religious issue....it's a moral delimma for most Christians who have been brought up believing it is wrong to condem others and to be tolerent, yet we are also told that gays/lesbians because they are not "normal" are basically to be looked-down upon. I am totally for gay/lesbian marriage. People confuse morals with religion in my opinion.

I think Rick nails the average Canucks opinion on this.
Who really gives a crap? Does harper think Canadians really believe it to be that big an issue? Repulican campaigns won't work here buddy, Canada doesn't have a 'bible belt' thank Christ.
I live in the so-called bible belt and these people are looney. (And I'm a fairly devote Catholic.)

Actually studies have shown that gay men and women are more likely to used protection then straight men and women. Since AIDS was such an epidemic within the gay community, we have learned the hard way just how important safe sex is. Nonetheless, there are still people out there who think that AIDS is a gay issue, or the result of gay sex.

Granted, but that doesn't change the fact that encouraging monogamy is a good idea.
Agreed
I don't get it. Gays already have equility...so why should we give them more rights than everyone else?

Read our charter of rights and freedoms, it's all clearly laid out for you.

The charter won't explain how you think gay's will have more rights than straights. How is that now?
