Most means, greater in number. In Canada, the one with Most votes... WINS. NON????
Non. At least, not necessarily. Look at the results of the 1979 election. More people voted Liberal than PC, but Clark won.
And it's all a matter of how you define your groups. A greater number of people voted for other parties than the Conservatives than voted for the Conservatives. Therefore, most people did not vote Conservative.
1979.... I though that Clark was put in power because the PM stepped down. And he lost his elections, thus the numbers you posted.
Nope. Truedeau led the Liberals into the election as PM, and Clark led the PCs. The Liberals got 40.11% of the vote to the PC's 35.89%, but only 114 seats to 136. Trudeau resigned, Clark was defeated in a noncofidence vote, Trudeau came back, and in 1980 the Liberals won.
I stand corrected...
THanks for the history class.
Clogeroo Clogeroo:
The last party to gain at least 50% of the popular vote was Mulroney in 1988. So-called Trudeau mania never even cracked 50% of the popular vote. The liberals have not gotten 50% of the popular vote since 1940 when they got 51%. Dief got it even in 1958 with 53%. Also in 1926 the liberals only had 42% of the popular vote and won 116 seats compared to the Conservative's 45% support and only got 91 seats.
Mulroney's true majority was in '84, not '88, but that's splitting hairs.
But yes, your analysis is right. Almost never does a party get a true majority of the vote. Just as often there are inversions of votes to seats. These are to be expected, though, under FPTP voting systems. The distortions are perpetual, and occasionally not just undemocratic, but actually anti-democratic.

NP. The quirks of our elections have been a pet interest of mine for some time.

Yes that is just fantastic. I'm sure Canadians in their droves will download that, or maybe just partisan Liberals then. Really.
Yawn.

Opps my mistake I meant 1984.
Democracy is not that great either though. Even if you managed to get 51% popular support does that mean the other 49% of the population should be ignored? Having a system that has maximum citizen participation is a better way to go that is why if you look at a country like Australia, which is a federation similar to ours, they have this. They put forward in proportional representation and an elected, equal senate to ensure that everyone has a voice no matter how remote or less urbanised the area they live in. This is not a true democracy but has many democratic features within its process, which can be honestly considered better at least compared to what we have. Democracy in its purest sense is just the majority rules and this is in no way the best way to do things.

Sure, but what we have here is a case of, frequently, on the order of 40% of the people ignoring the other 60%. It's minority rules, at present.

That is true but a democratically elected equal upper chamber could easily keep a government in line in minority situations.

Well it's a work in progress. I'm still trying to figure out how to fit the other 10 pages of grievances into a song. Perhaps an opereta in four or five acts with a full cast. I'm pretty sure we could save money on the star. A cardboard cut-out is really all that is needed to capture his charming personality.

Or you could just cut to the chase and say "I hate Tories, I'm a Liberal."
That would save time.

No, you've got me all wrong. I don't hate the Tories. This story would be presented as a tragedy. The tragic heroes in the story would be the Conservative voters, whose tragic flaw (blinding ambition) is what leads them to their fatal error (voting for Harper) and eventual downfall (death of conservative party). See I would actually be attempting to create pathos for the Conservatives which is a pretty nice thing to do. You guys are the victims in all of this, with the lies and deceptions that have been perpetrated on you, and I feel for you. Harper truly has become the great Con man.(Intended Pun)
