You're really getting desperate...

I guess then Harper must be a racist too. After all, Caroline AB, home of the Terry Long, former Aryan Nations leader, is just "down the road" from Calgary. Isn't that where Harper worked and where his political base is...

I guess that settles it! More proof of intolerant and racist Conservatives!!!

*sarcasm off*

In Germany during the mid 30's it was not uncomman for small towns to put up banners across the main street entering their village stateing, "No Jews Allowed".....

From alot of the commets I've just read, most of you here would seem to think that was ok....

The more things change, the more they stay the same!

Blue_Nose @ Tue Jan 30, 2007 10:26 am

You're equating banning Jews to banning domestic violence?

No, I'm equating banning all Jew's to the banning of all Muslims, from your town, just because they belong to that group..... Once these kinds of thing start to become excepted policy by town councils.... things can go down hill pretty quick, from there...

My point (sarcasm imtended) was that if SJ-24 can infer that Chretien is racist (he may or may not be, I don't know) simply because he lives in close proximity to this town, then Harper, due to his close proximity to Caroline, is also racist.

Well, my comments weren't aimed at you as such, and my comments are more about the town and how others here have reacted to their actions.

This town isn't banning anyone. What they're saying is that they'll not go to ridiculous extremes so as to attempt to not offend anyone.

As I see it, if someone is offended by something the general public does, they have a responsibility to do what they can to minimize their exposure to what offends them.

Why should an exercize club be forced to cover its windows so that some unrelated group doesn't have to see inside? Why shouldn't it be up to the Synagogue to cover up ITS windows? Why should the women there have their view of the outside blocked?

Why should kids be allowed to bring weapons to school, no matter how symbolic and how hard they're taught not to use them? Kids are taught not to hit each other with sticks, it still happens.

I'm atheistic and areligious. I personally don't like seeing religious propaganda splashed across billboards. I think to myself, "jeez, give it up." I don't believe in the message, I disagree with the philosophy of pushing your religion to others, I don't like reading it, but you know what I do? I suck it up. I ask myself what harm it's really doing to me. The answer is none. I will not call for such billboards to be banned. I would even oppose efforts to ban such messages by others who don't share my pragmatism. If I really don't want to see that billboard again, I'll take a different route.

Thank goodness somewhere someone is taking a stand against this lunatic bend-over-backwards accommodation of everyones little gripes and punishing the rest of us.

This is no different than the declarations made recently in Holland and Australia with regard to their expectations of immigrants entering their respective countries. Except in those countries, they are STATED FEDERAL GOVERNMENT POLICY!

Here in Canada, any assertion of our cultural values is considered "racist."

Typical.

A culture that doesn't define its values soon loses them.

That kind of thing and things similar to that were quite common around the world at the time.

Who brought up the "racism" angle?

It's the title of the thread Lily.

Muslims are not banned, and there's nothing to suggest that is the case.

What's banned are practices that are considered unacceptable to the community, that are considered acceptable in certain cultures.

If the banning of 'cultural' customs of domestic violence and sexism is 'wrong', I don't want to live in a community that's 'right'. All communities in Canada should be this explicit in that regard.

RUEZ @ Tue Jan 30, 2007 1:56 pm

I wonder how long it will be until the town bans English speakers?

I agree. Nothing that town has set out in it's list is a value seriously disputed by the average Canadian. They're just willing to put it in print.

While the move is provocative and baiting, I agree with them on most points. And I regret the fact more Canadians don't value our own cultural values enough to defend them. That's one thing I do respect about Quebequois. Unlike English Canadians, they're not willing to sell their cultural traditions out to abstract concepts like "Multiculturalism."

Yes, it is.

That means the "racist" accusation came from a Con, not a Lib, doesn't it?
Now your trolling Lily. Move along, nothing to see here.
