The problem is they don't. The two big problems I've noticed on reserves throughout the west is that there are either no police, or the police are white and rascist; the other problem is that there aren't any adequate schools. The school's for the past hundred years have taught about how Natives are barbaric savages seeking civilization, and the schools now adays are practically none existant.
How do I put this politely. Your two comments are wrong. I've taught on northern Manitoba reserves and while there worked part time as a guard in the RCMP holding cells. I've lived in quite a few different countries and cultures, but the biggest racists and haters I've met were all residents of the reserves. The only time I heard racial slurs in the detachment was when one of the 'guests' were being lodged.
As to the schools being inadaquate, they are run by the band. Insufficient funds for education can be blamed solely on the corruption that exists with band governments. Fiscal transparency and accountability is not enforced for fear of the race card being played. 'How dare Whitey or those bald headed white nazi bitches tell us how to spend OUR money.' You can't help people who don't want to be helped.

ShepherdsDog..I totally agree. The biggest racists are on the reserves. They are the ones that are poisoning their own kids into thinking that everyone owes them something and they have to do nothing to earn it.

I wouldn't say that the biggest racists are on reserves, though I must agree their is a high degree of racsim present on them. Metis are no longer accepted to the reservists as freinds. That's quite the extent of racsim. I disagree with Sheperd's Dog's comment however, that there are decent schools on reserves. I have seen them in Ontario, but no where here in Alberta.

If someone knows canada well and figures it out all I can say is , I'm all for native leadership because in reality Canada doesn't even exist but f**k I was born here so what are my choices ? I've got a quote here from Gilles Duceppe on thursday night regarding Native reserves "qui n'ont pas d'eau courante et n'ont pas d'electricite". Wich translates as " that don't have running water and don't have electricity".
Nextly, Natives simply do not have the taste for school. Well, not school but for "being all that you can be". Of all the Natives I met last night, most said that they would not attend university but had finished or were finishing high school with seventies in most classes. When I asked them why they did not go to school on the reserve wherest they lived (they had all gone to my younger neighbor's school) they said that they couldn't. The only school on their side of Enoch was not in Enoch at all, but in the city. The point is that these people had opportunity, and they were using it. Natives can and are decent people. Recall the book Prison of Grass, what Howard Adams describes of his childhood would drive most people to drug abuse, not just Natives.
We had a couple drinks and had lots of fun, and I was especially surprised to see that all of them
a.held their liquor and
b.did not get completely wasted when we could of afforded it
This I found very strange as most Natives I see are alchoholics and I have heard so many rumors that the fact that they have never had alchohol before makes them more succeptible to addiction. Now this was a small echantillon of the Native population here in Canada, but I can provide other examples, such as my family.
The overall point of this entire post is that it is circumstance and environment, not racial differences, wich has driven so many Natives to crime or drug abuse.

I had it's own police force but was replaced by a RCMP detachment because the native cops were not doing their jobs because it was usually a relative that was breaking the laws.
I wonder, would you be offended if I told you the RCMP should replace all the cops in small towns because it is usually their relatives who are breaking the laws?
