Canada shares a lot, or even all its values with Europe.

Uh, not really...

$1:
So tell me, why did Canada and the USA join NATO?

Because NATO stands for North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The North Atlantic is basically geographically defined as the part of the Atlantic that lies North of the Tropic of Cancer.

Also, NATO was the Western World's response to the growing soviet threat of the 50's and 60's. It was created so as to provide an effective tool against the Soviets. That is why Canada and the USA "joined" NATO, although everyone knows that both of us were really founders. :P

$1:
In you way of thinking the two countries should have made their own military alliance?

We have. It's called NORAD. Doofus.

$1:
Why are they in an trans Atlantic alliance?

You just answered your own question, dude. We're in a transatlantic alliance because Europe is on one side of the Atlantic and we're on the other...

Also, the EU is a social/economic/political alliance, NATO is purely a military alliance.

$1:
Canada indeed is independent, and joining the EU wouldn't make Canada lose independence.

Are you stupid? Take a good listen to what people all over Europe are crying about how Belgian bureaucrats are slowly destroying their countries, or about how the rich nations have to give a tonne of money to poor, unstable countries.

Joining the EU would be just as bad if not worse than joining America.

kenmore @ Tue Feb 26, 2008 10:14 am

shadowsweet.thanks for your profile pic... awesome.. anyway as far as the free trade agreement goes, it screwed Canada big time.. both Hillary and Obama have stated they want a more protectionist approach to the agreement.. I would assume the democrats will form the next government of the US.. if they are in favour of increased protectionism .... how would another republican government handle it.. Canada can be masters of their own house.. they have to change our policies for trade and move from dependence on the US.. we have already lost status as their #1 trade partner to China... they also have to change the rules of immigration.. tighten them up...

We shouldn't be trying to think of how to get Canada into the EU, but how to get mother Britannia out.

I think they can still be saved.

If it was just Free Trade, I'd be all for it. Unfortunately it's a lot more than that and I don't think it's in our best interest to surrender that much control to a distant Power.

The EU is a good idea, but just for Europe.

Not even for Europe.

Wullu @ Tue Feb 26, 2008 11:10 am

The EU isn't even a good idea for the EU!

Whatever moron came up with idea of ADDING another layer of government and bureaucrats to the lives of the people of Europe, should be sentenced to life in front of a firing squad.

kenmore kenmore:
There are lots of reasons why not..

But there are also many reasons why YES.
- Better, bigger transatlantic trade
- Cultural Exchange (Quebec-France, Belgium; English Canada-United Kingdom)
- Separation from the USA. Canada would be seen more idependent than before. Canada would play a very important role in Europe, becose of it's size, power and two cultures that could influence UK and France
-Many other

kenmore kenmore:
but the one I consider an issue is the movement of people from one counrty to the other.. In Europe you can live and work in any EU country..this is causing problems.. esp in Northern Ireland where they have seen a major influx of people..

The problem in Northern Ireland aren't new EU citizens, but Pakistanis and Hindus that don't want to assimilate. The Irish prefer closer cultural Polish or Lithuanian workers that Muslims and Hindus.

kenmore kenmore:
I do not favour an North America union either...

If Canada doesn't join the EU it will be a fact. Sooner or latter.
====================================================
Bacardi4206 Bacardi4206:
but I would seriously question our indipendance if we joined.

Not much to question. Anyway would the decisions of the EU be so different from Canada's goals?

Bacardi4206 Bacardi4206:
the EU Police

No such thing like this exists. There is no EU Police.

Brenda Brenda:
NO! Holy crap, how can someone ask a stupid question like that.

It's not stupid. Don't you see any positive in the idea?

Brenda Brenda:
If you do, you will get weird rules you cannot even dream of now,

I live in the EU... What rules?

Brenda Brenda:
you pay A LOT, and you gain nothing.

Ha ha. Bulshit. For whose money did my citi get new roads, schools, buses, cultural events? Santa Clause?

Brenda Brenda:
You will have to let Eastern European people in,

Excuse me, you have something against Eastern Europeans? I am Eastern European and a take that what you said racist.
Canada invites people from around the world, that have nothing in common with both Canadian cultures. What damege could Eastern Europeans do? And BTW, almost 10% of Canadians are Eastern European.

Brenda Brenda:
because everybody in the EU can work wherever they want, no visa necessary.

Yes, and that is the best thing about the EU. I can pack my bag and go to Portugal at any moment.
Anyway Canada abolished visas for most EU countries a long time ago, or is going to abolish soon.

Brenda Brenda:
You will lose your currency, and your independence.

Not true. Every state is independent, with it's own laws. Many EU countries don't have the Euro : UK, Sweden, Denmark.

Brenda Brenda:
Canada will be ruled by Brussels.

or Canada will rule Brussels

Brenda Brenda:
NO! Fuck, if that will seriously be considered, I have to find another country to live in :?

USA? It is just cross the border.

Greenland is technically part of Denmark, and by default was part of the EU. The citizens of Greenland enjoy a measure of autonomy from Denmark and firmly exercised it with a referendum and withdrew Greenland from the EU.
There is a lesson there.
Faroes opted out too
The Faroes didn't start but Greenland tried it and left.

But Canada isn't Greenland or the Faroes. We have other pros and Cons than they do. (don't mind the article)

As I know the main reason why they did is cause they wanted to protects there fishing basins from EU fisherman.

BartSimpson BartSimpson:
(...)a colony of Europe again. Do you really think the French, British, and Germans will sit idly by while you have all that oil in Alberta?

And what would they do? Invade?

BartSimpson BartSimpson:
Add to that you'll have to adopt (and subsidize) the Euro.
As I said before: not.
===============================================
MacDonaill MacDonaill:
Screw that. I like the EU to a point, but Canada needs to protect its independence.

And by joining it would.

MacDonaill MacDonaill:
I would enjoy free trade, I would enjoy even more a greater partnership with the big 4 Commonwealth Realms (Oz, UK, Canada, and NZ).

So would I. But, you see, UK won't live the EU, and would have to if it would like to make your big 4... We can join the EU though...

MacDonaill MacDonaill:
With France as well, because I have the feeling that French in Canada and Standard French move further and further away all the time, and if French is really going to survive in Canada, then our Francophone communities (Quebec, basically) need a lot more cultural exchange with France.

French is the major official language in the EU. All EU institutions are in French speaking cities: Brussels, Strasbourg, Luxembourg. Canada as being friend of France and the UK would have a strong position. Even stronger thanks to it's natural resources!

Joe_Stalin @ Tue Feb 26, 2008 11:46 am

Shitcan the idea immediately. Otherwise some woolly minded addlepated boneheaded opposition jerk will latch onto the idea, jump off the faltering global warming bandwagon and start a new 'religion'.

Europe has had the bun. It will be Sharia and Islamic before the middle of the century.
Quebec can join the fatherland in the EU if it leaves Canada. They are pacifist, leftwing and anti North American.
A better idea is for the UK to dump the EU and join a North American union before they too go down the toilet.

BartSimpson @ Tue Feb 26, 2008 11:48 am

The EU didn't invade France to screw up French agriculture.

You know it's illegal to make cheese in the EU without a permit?

The EU won't invade Canada, they'll just smother you in bureacracy.

Knoss @ Tue Feb 26, 2008 11:51 am

Canada, USA and EU are contental governments; federations which have enough resources to form an independent ecconomy. We could create Canada US EU trade agreement but there is no need for us to be under the EU.

What we should do is buy St. Piere and Miquellin from the French and make thouse Islands part of New Brunswick.

Appealing to the ego of the Frenchmen. French is pushed to the nth degree here but is still losing ground to the world's language.. English.
And finally.. the real reason they want Canada. The natural resources.

Piss off EU.

Ehhh... China? Islam?
Canada anyway has to protect it's identity in comparison with the USA. Joining the EU would do that. for sure.

Belgian bureaucrats helped change the post communist shit in something quite nice. But still a long time to go.
