Canada shares a lot, or even all its values with Europe.

Uh, not really...

Yes, actually.

You wish.. you cheese eating surender monkey.
The fact that 90% of Canadians live within 100 miles of the US border, and the fact that we've been culturally mixing with wild abandon for all history got lost on you, I guess.

Read the Timothy Garton Ash article in the opening post.

If Canada joined the EU we would be stuck with those tepid French Golden Delicious apples, yuk.

Congio, have you ever been further west than East-Germany? Go, please, do me a favour, go to Holland, Belgium, Italy, France. See, and notice what a depressing 3rd world country Poland is.
The wealthy EU countries, who gained that wealth by working hard for it for centuries, are cleaning up your shit, building your roads. If Canada would join, so would Canada. I am not gonna live to see that happen.
And you should change your political views in your profile. If you were really a right-winger, you would hate to profit from the wealthy west, and you would want for your country to give itself a kick in the butt, and show you can handle your own shit.

I will say one thing that kinda contradicts my previous post: Ask the question again in 10 or 20 years. If Brussels would loosen its' control, if Eastern Europe catches up with Western Europe, if things change significantly in other areas, then Canada joining the EU might make sense. It is far too early to be considering it though as it is still an unproven Institution.

Congio @ Tue Feb 26, 2008 1:42 pm

Brenda... I've been to the west. Many times. I guess I've seen more countries than you... Portugal, Spain, France, England, Luxembourg, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Greece, Croatia, Sweden, Denmark, Switzerland, Austria, Bohemia, Slovakia, Hungary, Belarus, Russia, Cyprus, Turkey, Serbia, San Marino and Vatican.

Maybe I forgot something.

I know Poland is a depressing country, but I wouldn't call it 3rd world. Go to Egypt, that is 3rd world.
The reason Poland is bad the way it is, is because of Hitler's invasion of 1939 and 50 years of Communism, what was speared for Holland. World War 2 in Holland was a farce in comparison with Polands experiences.

But we are not talking about Poland, but Canada in the EU.

Yes, I agree. It is probably to soon.

Yeah, who gives a crap about Amsterdam & Rotterdam being leveled after Holland surrendered to the Germans?

Yep, those Hollanders had it easy.

I think you are wrong here, baby. You should stop guessing, and get your facts straight.

It is a depressing country, and you are not right wing. Don't insult those who are.

Bye bye!

BartSimpson @ Tue Feb 26, 2008 1:58 pm

Poland is depressing. Go to Dublin and ask any of the many Poles you'll meet where they'd rather be and they'll pick Dublin over anywhere in Poland any day of the week.

Not to be down on Poland, mind you, but it is depressing. Granted, much better than it was when I was first there in 1986, but it has a long ways to go.

I know Poland is depressing, that is why I want to move back to Canada.

Who have I insulted? If telling the truth that Poland's war and post war experiences were 10 times more horrible than any other western countries is insulting than I am sorry. It is the truth.

Bye bye? That is all you have to say?

Why did you leave Holland?

Congio @ Tue Feb 26, 2008 2:14 pm

You guys don't have to tell me about Poland. For godness sake, I live here!

I know how depressing it is. Every day I wait for summer when, at last, I will go back to Canada.

But is the Fact that Poland is depressing the argument you want to use against the Canada joining EU option? Find something better ;)

You come up with a list of countries, and tell me you have seen more than I did. Fine. Bullshit. You don't know, get your facts.

Who have I insulted?
The politically right wingers here. You want your native country Canada to pay for the infra structure and the getting back on their feet after communism, and you call yourself rightwing? Get a grip, let Poland fix itself.

Because, for instance, I am not gonna pay for eastern european countries to get their act together, at costs of Dutch taxpayers. Because the EU rules were gonna cost me my business. Because of... Oh well, why would you care?

Congio @ Tue Feb 26, 2008 2:28 pm

OK,

Should the EU accept Canada?

Well, Canada is a perfect possible member country. Rich, with natural resources, and lots of lands. Most important: two European cultures.

Only one problem: Canada isn't in Europe, but that is not a big problem.

Should the Canada join the EU?
Well here it gets a bit bumpy.

Canada would join an elite club of European countries. Canadian culture could gain a lot thanks to EuroCanadian coop.
Canada could get new immigrants from Central Europe, who are culturally closer than for ex. Africans.
Our economy would be more European oriented, and Canada would have to relay only on the US.

The negative is that Canada could have some problems with Brussels and would have to pay money to it.

No, it is the fact that Poland is one of the biggest gainers of subsidy money of the EU that is an argument, because you want to have Canada pay for it. Another wealthy country that can pay to clean up your shit. And that then has to open its borders, who are closed, in comparisan to the EU-country borders. You need a permit and a visa to work in Canada, you don't have to in Europe. That makes, that the eastern Europeans get the jobs of the westerners, because they work for less money, but don't spend it. It makes the economy go down the drain. It puts for instance truck drivers on welfare, and it makes large companies go to eastern Europe, because the labour is cheaper there. Still, the "wealthy west" can pay for the subsisies the "poor east" collects. Too bad the "wealthy west" cannot afford it anymore.

The EU is a drama, and it will soon fall apart.

Yes I am a right wing. I've seen what communism does, and I hate it. Left wingers are close to communism.

I don't want Canada to pay for. The EU doesn't pay for Poland of Bohemia or Slovakia. The EU helps these countries.
There is a big difference between paying for and helping.
Poland and other new members are not living at the coast of the old EU members, just taking some help. What you are saying is kind of insulting. A native pole would be very mad at this point.

Brenda Brenda:
I never said it was not bad, but don't think others had it better.

Well, I'm not saying you had it easy. War is war. But the Germans and Soviets didn't do to Holland stuff like they did here.
Auschwitz is in Poland, not in Holland.

I do care. I am about to do the same.
Well, Canada is one of the best countries in the world. So is Sweden.
Sweden is in the EU.
