Rev_Blair Rev_Blair:
Cooperative Commonwealth Federation is what it says on Grandma's old paperwork. She was there from the start of the party in the early 1930's and was still manning the phones for the NDP the last election before she died.

Communists and social democrats do have things in common, Stellar. There are also a lot of differences. One of Grandma's sisters was (still is actually) a communist. The differences become very apparent when you get to compare them that closely.

The two big differences are:

1. The existence of small, independent businesses working together cooperatively (socialism) and state-run cooperatives taking over small independent businesses (communism).

2. The adherence to democratic principles by social democrats. Social democrats require things to come from the people, communists act for the people whether the people like it or not.

Also, true Marxist Communism demands a revolution that overthrows the capitalist system (therefore, capitalism/industrialism must be a pre-existing condition PRIOR to the revolution –that wasn’t Russia before Lenin).

There are massive ideological/practical differences between classic Marxism and its offshoots like Leninism, Stalinism & Maoism

That's very true, Mustang.

Marx basically said that corporations had to form monopolies and gain control of the government and that would lead to a workers' revolution that would lead to pure communism. He saw it as being the inevitable outcome of capitalism.

I doubt that anything even approaching pure communism is possible, but if your look at the way corporations have been gobbling each other up and the influence they have over government, Marx begins to look pretty prescient.

Rev,

I wholeheartedly agree! Unbridled capitalism (in the current guise of unchecked globalization) isn’t the answer to all of society’s ills. MNC move to locations were they could manipulate sovereign governments and exploit its workers by providing inexcusable wages and working conditions. With the exception of market competition, it’s all pluses for the corporations. Hell, even the United States breaks trusts.

I’m not a Marxist, but I can empathize with his ideas (especially when they’re analyzed in a contextual manner).

Ralph is a tool.

Who's the guy who pied Ralph in the face? He just started his 30 days in jail. Anyways, point would be, If you were pied in the face by someone, rather roughly I might add, do you think that they would get 30 days in jail?

F*** NO

Ralph is a tool.
makes you pay for your free health care :? :?  :x :x

That guy shouldda used a cowpie instead, and gave Ralph a new meaning for the phrase "shit faced"

Rev_Blair @ Fri Feb 18, 2005 3:54 pm

Ralph look like an idiot for not laughing the pie incident off and saying, "Hey, let the guy go. It was only a pie."

Mustang...Contrary to accusations that fly my way from time to time (check some of the old threads), I believe in a mixed economy that encourages small business as much as possible. Small business is really the heart of competition.

That our alleged leaders haven't read Marx (I thought these guys were supposed to know about this stuff) enough to be aware of some of its most tenets frightens the hell out of me.

How? I pay my monthly healthcare premiums, don't you?

Pieing Ralph was kinda funny, but only after it happens and only after everyone realizes it was justy a pie. If you were being serious and someone nailed you unexpectedly would you be pissed? I bet you would be. 30 days worth is harsh though. Is there a limiting factor when it comes to the law for pieing? Or is it assault plain and simple?

It takes about 30 seconds max to realize what happened. Ralph reminds me of the kid who is always giving "face washes" and nailing the little kids in the head with snowballs, but goes running to his mommy the first time somebody tosses one back.

Yessir, that'd be great. But how do you protect them from Uhmerican coperations under our current relationship with the US?

I'm in the south because I was part of a small manufacturing company that was kicking ass in the American market. So what happens? The huge Uhmerican conglomerate whose ass we are kicking, buys us. 8O (I don't like the motherf***ers so I moved south to work for their competition).

What do you do? Canada needs big business too, big enough to take on (or at least stand up to) Americans.

You should go pick up a couple books on Marx, Robair. Pay cash though...there's nothing more inconvenient than having a black Ford show up at your door in the middle of the night.
