8 years? That sounds like your power is kicking out.

Overheating? Any warning beeps before the shutdown?

Haven’t heard any beeps but I also wear headphones so I wouldn’t if there were beeps. Currently monitoring my temps as I play some more and so far the temps are in the normal operating ranges

You're not running McAfee, I hope?

Yeah that's my fear and what I'll be testing next.

And no, I'm not running McAfee. I run as little in the background as I can get away with.

The last week or so, my PC has been restarting itself randomly in the middle of a gaming sesh.

Currently, I'm out of ideas other than maybe doubling my RAM or taking out the PSU and testing to see if it's on the fritz. Any suggestions?

I might have bad news. First, does it blue screen, and is there an error code presented while the core dumps? You can check the System log, in "Administrative tools" -> Computer Management -> Logs and look for a power on event, and it will either have the code or say the restart was unexpected.

If there is no blue screen, then you have classic static damage. :( Everyone who says that you don't need to assemble computer bits using safe static handling procedures - this is why. The components in a PC are meant to deal with 1.5 volts, and your body can generate 1000 volts. This can discharge through sensitive components and cause cracks in the silicon substrate. These cracks widen with time, and heating and cooling. Eventually they result in random system failures.

I hope it's not that, because there is nothing you can do for it.

No Blue Screens of death when it happens. I checked the system log (ty for that) and this is what it shows:

So if it is static damage, is my whole PC FUBAR or can I get away with replacing just the power unit?

If the power is giving out swapping the powerplant should suffice as it is no longer able to output consistent voltage, however if that is going the rest of the rig is not long for this world either. If it is the power best to get a new rig outright.

Since your not getting a bluescreen then the bios isn't catching this is sounds like. Never a good sign.

Static damage wouldn't take 8 yrs to show up... most likely cause is your PSU.
Your system is 8 yrs old, you could just try replacing it.
Replacing the whole thing is a better choice. Considering after 3 yrs you're on 'borrowed time' the way they manufacture crap and up specs these days.

kernel power can be a lot of things, even a fucked up windows update can cause kernel power errors. And I've helped someone else dealing with this just this week.

Update everything, google kernel power and alter power settings to what they describe (normally disabling hybrid sleep and disabling fast startup).

Then start into hardware.

Use Occam's razor. Look at the obvious and cheapest things first...

Your free time when you're awake is worth as much as what you make in working 8 hrs.

Therefore a $100 PSU is cheaper than 8 hours pissing around waiting for DISM and sfc to run...

xerxes @ Wed Sep 07, 2022 8:25 pm

Yeah. I’m thinking it’s the PSU too now. That said, my PC hasn’t done it for 24 hours now, so I’ll keep an eye on it and if it starts acting up again I’ll replace the unit.

Thanks for all the suggestions and advice! It was very much appreciated. [B-o]

It's not cheaper if it isn't the PSU though.

But you'll have a PSU for the new mobo, CPU & RAM you're gonna need won't you? :D Toss in a new NVME boot drive... beats plodding along with an 8 yr old i5

I upgraded what I can on my aging rig. I put in an SSD two years ago and it was the biggest quality of life improvement I've ever made with it.

Also, today I replaced the failing PSU and threw in an extra 8Gb of RAM. And she's running very well.

Swapping it out was as easy as I hoped it would, though just pulling the old PSU out was a major pain in the ass. That thing was wedged in tight.
