It's no different than a secular person offering their condolences.

This should help greatly, as opposed to any concrete political or legal action that might possibly prevent parents having to prematurely bury their children after getting shot to death at school.

Words. Lots of words.

Words of condolence, words filled with outrage, frustration and anger. Words filled with platitudes, words ringing hollow.

Another school shooting in America.

It is so repetitive, so expected now, that it is almost ho-hum.

How sad is that?

It is only mid-February, the new year little more than six weeks old, yet there have already been eight school shootings in the United States that have resulted in death or injury.

This time it was 17 confirmed murdered at a secondary school in Parkland, Fla., named Marjory Stoneman Douglas High, on Valentine’s Day no less, by a 19-year-old gunman who had earlier been expelled for disciplinary reasons.

Marjory Stoneman Douglas, for those who want a little trivia mixed in with their horror, was an American journalist whose staunch defence of the Florida Everglades kept it from being drained and reclaimed for development. She died in 1998 at the age of 108.

Meanwhile, up in Washington, the President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, spoke a lot of words about Americans standing together, but not one word about gun control.

“We are all joined together as one American family, and your suffering is out burden, too,” he said, his words coming slowly, deliberately.

“No child, no teacher, should ever be in danger in an American school.”

Trump didn’t answer them, of course.

There would be no mention of guns. No mention of how Nikolas Cruz, orphaned with his widowed mother dying months ago, a student to be watched for signs of danger, and with purportedly a history of mental instability, was able to legally buy the ever-popular AR-15 assault rifle that has murdered too many to accurately count.

But this was Florida, after all. What the hell? The second amendment is embraced in Florida where wearing concealed weapons in the Sunshine State are considered the norm, not the exception.

Floridians not only have the right to bear arms, they have the right to hide the arms they bear. How liberal-minded is that?

The National Rifle Association, the most powerful lobby in the United States, spent $30 million supporting Donald Trump in his presidential victory over Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.

As Trump told the NRA at its 2017 convention, “You came through for me, and I am going to come through for you.

“I will never, ever let you down.”

So far, so good — for the NRA, that is, but not for the dead or the many more dead to come.

Only several real solid conclusions to be made:

1) nothing will be done
2) Austerity Hero conservative politicians who have been merrily gutting the public health care system in the US will still make hay blaming the mental health care people for "why didn't you do something about this kid?"
3) it will happen again, and soon, kicking the same old cynical cycle into gear for another round of absolutely nothing meaningful

Honestly, the argument will never be settled until it swings one way entirely. Either every state turns into a shall issue state with zero "no gun" zones and we see if they are right, or it swings the other way and we see if the other side is right. In the middle this will continue to happen forever.

From the Associated Press comes the revelation that the shooter's alleged membership with some bunch of yokels is fake news.

A law enforcement official says he knows of “no known ties” between the suspect who confessed to a deadly mass shooting at a Florida high school and a white supremacist group.

Lt. Grady Jordan is a spokesman for the Leon County Sheriff’s Office in Tallahassee, where the white nationalist militia known as the Republic of Florida is based. Jordan said Thursday that his office has arrested militia leader Jordan Jereb at least four times since January 2014 and has been monitoring the group’s membership.

He says his office has “very solid” information on the group and “there’s no known ties that we have that we can connect” 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz with the group.

Jereb told The Associated Press earlier Thursday that Cruz was a member and participated in paramilitary drills in Tallahassee.

Jereb said he didn’t know Cruz personally and that “he acted on his own behalf of what he just did and he’s solely responsible for what he just did.”

Isn't the leader of the group saying he is a member solid information?

Apparently it's the leader of some obscure group exploiting the biases of the media to get some free publicity for his hate group.

A group which I will henceforth refuse to mention.

Yup.

Just as empty, hollow and meaningless.

Witness this, the very last US century.

It's been a nice run.

By the way, when we're over and done you people might need an adequate military.

Just saying.

We need a wall!

Maybe, we can hoodwink some jerkwater hillbilly in the GOP to build one for us.

Carson! Carson wanted to build a wall along the Canadian border until someone showed Ben a map, told him which part was "Canada" which part is "USA", what is between the two and how long it would have to be.

Hardly anybody else in the GOP can find Canada on map, so we have a plan!

Nah, they'd just invade us because it's cheaper than a wall. They could get rid of our health care system for us, ban gay marriage, make marijuana criminal again, and put an evangelical church on every street the same way the crazier Muslims want a mosque on every block. Then they can say they liberated us, made the world safe for whatever, and all that other tedious stuff that is written down in the MAGA playbook of American exceptionalism.

There are certainly lots of willing quislings up here who would sell their seesters to GI Joe.
