Who gives a fuck? It's flu. Call me for a vaccine when it's the Black Death. I had goddamn H1N1 and I barely even knew I was sick.

Tell that to the 115 Canadians who have already died from H1N1.

And how many from the "seasonal flu"?

USABabe and I are getting shot tomorrow. Have a very very little one at home that we don't want to pass it on to. The little one is still about five months away from being able to get the vaccine.

If I wasn't a new daddy, I wouldn't bother with the shot.

If someone wants to push me on a reference I'll try to dig it up again but it was from the Canadian Medical Association. Hard to find anything on the "normal" flu since the first 100,000 hits on a search engine are Swine flu. However the CMA had a report in 2003 that said something like 3000 died form regular flu in Canada that year and I found another more recent course quoting the number as higher in 2006.

So as it stands now I"m more worried about the seasonal flu killing me, and I was not worried about that ever.

I'll try to find it again as the number surprised me as well, I might have misunderstood it.
"Health Canada estimated that 700 to 2500 deaths may be attributable to influenza."

Those numbers sound correct to me. I agree with you, its hard to find at the moment. It looks like the seasonal flu doesn't exist this year, if you get the flu, it is the swine flu.

I also agree with you about being more worried about the normal flu. And I never worried about that. The last time I had the flu was 30 years ago, and my kids never had it. Or I have seen it as a cold, that is possible too ;-)

The double pneumonia I had 5 years ago wasn't flu either, just pneumonia :) Antibiotics and 3 days of fever and done ;-) As a mom with 2 kids, very young then, you cant go to bed. They just do their thing, so so did I. Yes, I took them to school, yes I did groceries, yes, I cooked them dinner, no matter how sick I was. (fever of 40...)

Shit happens, life goes on.

*shrugs*

My reasons as well for getting both flu shots this year.

Cases across Canada

I am not so sure that there are no seasonal flus this year. I thought I heard that one of the delays for the H1N1 vaccine was a choice to hold off so they could produce some seasonal flu vaccines

Of course there are seasonal flu's this year. It's just that you don't hear anything about it, because the Swine flu took over the head lines.

4000 to 8000 Canadians depending on the year and strain of flu and generally 36000 Americans each year.

You'll forgive me if I scoff at N1H1 and declare it a sheep in wolf's clothing. Wake me if the death toll gets above 10000 in Canada and we'll talk.

ASLplease @ Fri Nov 06, 2009 2:54 pm

so its a good idea at 8000 , but not a 113?where do we draw the line?

Benn @ Fri Nov 06, 2009 4:00 pm

Jeff makes a valid point. "Aweful pandemic will kill multitudes has been rasied a lot in the last few years, Sars, BIrd Flu, all are still around but turned out to not be a notable issue after all.

On the other hand, who the heck in Government is going to want to be the one country that is saying "Nah, its not a big deal, don't worry" and they see it turn out to be the real real deal!

pheryllt @ Fri Nov 06, 2009 4:23 pm

H1N1 flu shot is a waste of time unless you are one of the high risk ppl. For all those who are getting the shot because somebody close to them had the flu are wasting there time and the doctor's time. If you are exposed to the flu and have not come down with it chances are your body has built up its own antibodies to it and the flu shot is useless. Nobody in my family is getting the flu shot or the H1N1 shot, eating healthy and exercise would be far better for you than going to the doc for the poke.

Nice attitude, you sound like Stalin...one death is a tragedy and a million is a statistic

CanadianJeff @ Sat Nov 07, 2009 12:52 am

and I know I've made a valid point when the best argument people come up with is to compare you to Stalin or Hitler.

When and if swine flu proves to be as deadly as any regular seasonal flu that we all get every year then I'll give it some credit seeing has how it's more infectious. Until then I think all the people jumping up and down over swine flu are being very very foolish and easily controlled by fear and the media.

I have one very important rule I follow in life and it's served me very very well. NEVER modify your behavior based on fear. People who are scared don't often make rational decisions.
