And how do you propose to ship your goods to Europe?

Ever hear of the west coast?

the west coast ships to Asia across the Pacific, not Europe. Shipping to Europe goes from the East Coast across the Atlantic.

We used to ship a few million tonnes of coal to Europe,it went through the west coast.

Sounds much more expensive and less cost effective than shipping from the east. Is that why the operative phrase there is "used to?"

B.C. is really only of value to the rest of Canada for the Pacific coastline; otherwise we wouldn't have built that bloody railroad they wanted. ROTFL

B.C.'s importance to the rest of Canada is really little other than for importing crap from China and Japan but that can be said about every province. How much shipping is even done to Europe anymore? Maybe some imports but nothing like it used to be. B.C. joined Canada because Canada took our debt and built us a railway, which was seen as beneficial to linking up with the European markets. Canada wanted B.C. so they could link up with the rest of the British Empire such as Australia, India, and Hong Kong. Then the prairies could become settled and provide grain to ship to the east and west and all across the Empire.

Most trade now is just exported to the United States for they are the largest trading partners of every province. The highest is Ontario, 90% of their exports go to the USA and 70% of their imports come from there. Only the territories export more to the United Kingdom and Belgium than they do to the United States. Inter provincial trade is smaller than trading with the United States essentially everything just goes south rather than east or west or to the world. We are like a colony :P only 15% of what we produce goes outside the United States.

Anyone and everyone who says "let them go" is thereby a separatist and a hypocrite if they simultaneously pretend to support a united Canada.

Not necessarily, Firecat. I love my country very much, and I want to see it become strong and UNITED. As it is right now, it seems like it's fragmented because of this and other issues that have been on the table. I mean, Quebec has been pushing for sovereignty for what - 40 years, now? If they want to leave Canada, why shouldn't they be allowed to separate? At the very least, allowing Quebec to separate would end the seemingly constant complaints about how they're not being treated fairly, and the rest of Canada could really use the money that's been funnelled out to Quebec for years... Image

I hear you. We mustn't lose sight, though, that this ideology is not held by the majority of Quebeckers but a vocal (oh so vocal) minority. And that is what we hear about. Federalists in Quebec don't hold loud rallies like young separatists do. Federalism is more likely quietly espoused by older people who aren't the angry outrage kind. A separatist rally gets more tv time than PTA meetings. ;)
As a "voice" it will never go away, no matter how Canada evolves. Even were Quebec to separate they would themselves be plagued by a "new federalist" voice demanding Montreal remain Canadian.
