The USA better tread carefully with their best ally in the world is all I will add. Both countries need each other and geographically, it's perfect for both. Canada should be considered as important as every one of their states IMO and we should consider them the same. Anything aside from that will only hurt both countries and their people.

Just want to add, I never hesitate to buy USA or Canada made. China made or other countries I do. I understand the big picture though and love the NHL too! lol

Canadian will always upsurp American, unless american is much better quality or Canadian is unavailable.

American will always upsurp European or Japanese, unless Euro-paniese is much better quality or American is unavailable.

Euro-panese will always upsurp Chiniese, Mexican, or any other, unless those are much better quality or Euro-panese is unavailable.

So basically, I buy American and Canadian all the time. My laptop was assembled in Richmond from parts made in Ontario, California, Ohio, and Japan.

On the rare occasion I go to discount stores like Volde-mart or Zellers, I do my best to check the labels on the shit I buy to see where they are from. exception to this is if said item is under 20 bucks, then I really don't give a damn.

I certainly hope he keeps those trade walls down, we need each other in this economic world. The "short term feel good" trade walls that certain sectors like creates far more problems in the long run and why should either side be freightened by a little competiton. We both trade all over the world there is plenty of business for both of us.

Fortunately we have a new President who doesn't have his head up and locked.

That is a good cartoon.

As Hwacker would point out though.. the US does have enormous strategic reserves that Obama might tap if his short sighted policy decision catches them short of oil.

Those oil reserves are for emergencies only, and they won't last long. Soon enough it will worsen his situation because once the reserves run out. Not only will they realize he fucked up oil trade from other countries, but he also depleted his nations reserves.

Diddn't the Canadian Government already tell Canadian's to Buy Canadian earlier? I also don't see how that will worsen our economy. As long as we still had free-trade as in selling goods and buying some goods but focused more on a Canadian based purchase. That's how China got so rich, because everybody was buying so many Chinese cheap as products. 5 cents to make, sold for 5.99.

I wish we focused more on job creations that involved selling products to other countries to boost our economy from the money we get from whoring off our resources.

I minor idea would be to sell Canadian tukes or however you spell it. They are a Canadian Symbol that tourists can bring home with them or purchase. People like to buy things like that from countries. Something that can be widely reconised as something that belongs to that country like a symbol.

Like Paris and there Efiel Tower key chains, etc.

Very minor and small, but a idea and start. I personally would love the start of more companies that design and make things like the Canadarm. If they sold that to every country with a space program and kept it on the market and kept making more designs. Not only would that widely benefit the world wide effort of space exploration but it would bring in a lot of cash into the Canadian Economy.

I would also love to have companies created that made non-combat military vehicles. Like new and improved UAV's, Transport Choppers, Trucks, Vehicles, APC's. Etc. Maybe even tap into military ones like tanks, and attack choppers. Supply our military with new and updated gadgets and sell them off to countries who want them to help stimulate our economy.

I know Canada has the people to make this possable, my mom's friend spend a long time training as a Aerospace engineer but could not get a job because there was no work for them in Canada. All those job's were in America.

You can thank Diefenbaker for that one.

The reason the protectionist measures of the 30's pushed the US into further economic despair was because at that time the US was the world’s largest net exporter. Now that the US is running a huge trade deficit, protectionism can only help the US economy. I'm not denying that these measures will hurt and possibly cripple other countries’ economies, but people need to recognize the difference and stop using that scenario as a knee jerk reaction.

:o You're going to need to do better than that. Exactly how can protectionism help the USA? How does a nation's trade balance have anything do with whether protectionism is good or bad?

Axeman is right. Protectionnism is bad for EVERYBODY. It seems only good in simple words.

Well, almost everybody. Protectionism is good for the owners of the business being protected. It can also be good for the foreign business that the protection is AGAINST. American protectionism against Japanese cars in the 1970s and 80s drove up the price of those imports and made Toyota and Honda richer than they ever imagined. Everyone else (ie. taxpayers and consumers) gets it from behind.

Let me correct: Protectionnism is bad for EVERY country's economy. 8)

Explain to me how giving contracts to Canadian steel producers over American producers benefits Americans, especially when paying with their tax dollars? Too many countries have become dependents of the US economy, while the US has become dependent on foreign manufacturing. People are crying because they realize the US will make off with the better deal if Obama enacts some protectionist measures.

Okay, I can't teach you a whole course in economics on one thread, but, if Canadians are more efficient at steel-making than Americans, then Americans should let Canadians do that task and use their labour and capital to do things that they do better than Canadians. You totally dodged there, btw.

Canadian_Mind @ Sun Feb 01, 2009 3:28 pm

because if they don't we cut of their oil supply, which would wreak havoc on their economy.
