I think we’re seeing the start of a wedge.
Obama is all about image and talk but he really has no clue or experience with world issues,. Biden, an old political war horse, is supporting a “buy US” platform, because he knows it’s only US folks that support US politicians.

This is a feel-good cover up to smooth over that gap before the wedge starts.

Actually Obama mentioned something like this alot over the campaign and to be honest, for those who are surprised by this weren't paying attention.

This is an important time because it could signal a shift in the global economy, one that Canada as a trade based nation, is not suited to handle. Our politicians need to start looking at plans NOW for how to deal with a more isolated and protectionist U.S..

Run a protectionist government? Yes we can.

So you're saying that were likely to see a far stronger "buy US" mantra from this government? I agree with that completely.

Oil is a good example also and this US admin. really has no idea where their nations oil comes from. Start screwing with our exports and we might close the valves.. won't that make Danny Williams happy

This is what happens when Government get involved in trade. There is no need to have NAFT be a 20,000 plus page document. In fact, we need true free trade with no government at all.

It's not surprising, there have been protests in France and Britain
over the same thing.

"British jobs for British people"

Fact is, protectionism wont help, and may very well hurt attempts at
recovery. But at this point, probably nothing can be done about it.

It's every dog for himself.

Albertan’s would sacrifice a few months of revenue for the Country.

Your right, I don’t believe Mr. Millions would.

You know, all the gripe coming from you guys in the past about using oil as a weapon, I'm having a hard time seeing if you are being sarcastic or not here.

Funny cartoon btw.

ridenrain @ Sat Jan 31, 2009 10:26 am

That is a good cartoon.

As Hwacker would point out though.. the US does have enormous strategic reserves that Obama might tap if his short sighted policy decision catches them short of oil.

sure what the hell as soon as we turn the taps off to the US the price at the pumps in Toronto will increase XD

See, the one thing the US should do is try to get free trade with countries like Japan that screw them over with their protectionism, but instead, they try to screw us over.

Sapio @ Sat Jan 31, 2009 11:10 am

Great Cartoon Alta_redneck. So very true, it is only part protectionism. Or protectionism were it will not hurt to much.

Like SigPig said, if you paid attention in the campiagn this shouldn't be a surprise.

What I'm wondering is, is the "Buy American" clause Obama's doing or the work of some Congressman or Senator trying to win votes?

Donny_Brasco @ Sat Jan 31, 2009 11:20 am

With all our resources we could try producing more of our own goods and services. That would mean that we'd actually have to do something that others pay kids 3 cents a day to do though.
