There were laws concerning floorspace (I think the cutoff for being able to be open on Sunday was around 30000 sqft or so) and grocery stores have been making a mockery of this lately by chopping their stores into little "boutiques" on Sundays. I'm guessing the government didn't want to deal with this hassle all over again in a year's time, so that's likely why he went farther than the court decision had dictated.

Good for them, 30 000 ft^2 is ridiculus why should 7 11 be open and Walmart closed?

'Bout Time we got with the times. No one relaxes on Sunday, not even Religious Nuts.

Plus, I remember so many times that Sunday has ruined alot of things. Like for example, the only breaks my mother gets to bring me to the store are on Sundays. (I'm broke and she won't give me the moeny she owes me, so she has to take me)

I would like to officially welcome Nova Scotia to the 21st Century. Holy crap I didnt think there were still places in this country where you couldnt go shopping on a sunday. It amazing to me that we can have a 4 page argument about peanuts in schools in another thread but only one person has pointed out the obvious here in this one...... keeping stores closed on Sunday's is a basic forcing of religious beliefs by the state onto the indivdual. As a non church going person I find that more offensive than all the mom and pops going out of business trying to compete with Wallmart. Guess what, eventually, due to thier high prices, THEY WERE GOING TO GO OUT OF BUSINESS ANYWAY. Saying that allowing the big boxes to be open on Sunday is the cause of it is rediculous. And for all of you that are sitting there bitching about mom and pops being driven out of business im gonna ask you two questions.

1. The last time you bought gas did you go to a Petro Canada, Shell, Esso, etc. or an independant Race Track gas? And if you went to the independant was it because you support the business or because it was more conveint at the time?

2. The last time you bought a major appliance, ie TV Stereo, did you get it from the Future Shop, Soundsaround, Best Buy, etc. or did you go to Stan's TV and appliance and pay 1.3 to 1.5 times the price?

EXACTLY SO SHUT THE FUCK UP ABOUT IT THEN!!!!!!!!! It's amazing to me that so many people can argue over spending a nickle or dime more for a pack of burger to keep the mom and pop going, but wont pay the same mark up on something that costs in the hundreds or thousands. If you claim to have morals, and want to get on your high horse then you better be ready to go all the way about it.

BTW, I buy all my major appliances from Best Buy (they do own future shop now so dont bitch to me about not supporting Canadian business because those days are gone), I buy my groceries at the Wallmart and the Safeway. Why's that you ask......BECAUSE IT'S CHAEPER, AND I CAN GET THEM ON A SUNDAY

I personally didn't have a big problem with the law - Nova Scotia, as Premier MacDonald put it this evening on As it Happens, is a traditional, family oriented province that values its relaxed pace and way of life. You don' have to be religious to appreciate the idea - I've never had to work retail or at a grocery store, but, with the exception of groceries, I never felt like i was a problem. PEI still does it, by the way (except around the holidays).

I think most of rural NS will remain closed on Sunday, as they were mostly in opposition to Sunday Shopping when they held the plebiscite.

Traditionally family oreinted values?????

 Sill me.... you mean traditional Christian values. Do me a favour, leave your religion in your home, as for me, this Sunday im off to the Wallmart.

Oh and btw, our liquor stores are private out here, so they are open on sundays, bars too. I wonder how much real oppostion there would be to government liquor stores being open after 6 pm or on Sundays.

I'm not sure why shops have to be open all the time anyway are we so consumerist we can't live without one day heaven forbid the mall might be closed? I guess it’s not a big deal but having one day off out of the week for everyone to relax isn't so bad either.

Some of us work sundays. Nothing like rolling into a town in the bible belt on a sunday and trying to get a room, dinner, or lunch for the next day when everythings closed. :?

Ziggy you got to be a little more independent when in the bible belt, I always pack a coffee maker with me, just for those Sundays. And with a coffee maker you not only have coffee but you can make instant soup in it too. If you feel like a main course add KD to the hot water the coffee maker made, now you got lots of time to lay back and check out the Saturday paper cause you can’t get a Sunday paper until Monday lol. After reading paper, see how the KD is doing, stir occasionally, most likely still a little crunchy. Now time to lay newspaper out over your bed, grab the stale bread you used from the last Sunday, ( pick small areas of mold off if necessary ) open a can of Tuna, use half for sandwiches and put the rest in the coffee maker with the KD and now you got Tuna casserole cooking. Suppers usually ready around 11 and your hungry enough to eat farts out of a rump roast by then. Or if you don’t want to do that there’s always the can of stew on the manifold trick for lunch. If there’s not going to be anything open Sunday, another thing I do is order 2 suppers on Saturday night and get one put in tin foil, and it goes on the manifold, if your working hard it’s as fast as a microwave lol

Na I think I’d rather have Sunday shopping too

Yeah Mom and Pop shops buy their supplies from Walmart , Superstore and Safeway too , and then have no choice but to charge you much higher . Shipping is the sole winner of places like Walmart . But to Canadian Business vs American is not the issue ie the Bay , Eatons , Canadian Tire , Totem etc What do you think happened to them ? I quote under the power of Capslock "ALL " American stores and product are the lowest quality you can find on the planet its total shit shit shit garbage . I can feed the family at any of the local mom and pop restaurants for $30.00 but going through the drive through at McDonalds cost the same . Fast food is expensive PERIOD and let the truth be known it costs no more to build a kitchen table out of hard wood which could withstand a low speed vehicle impact and out live you than the paper thin laminant covered cardboard Walmart sells . You will now find less quality in all the Canadian stores to keep up with the American Garbage competition . I can only think of electronic products and vehicles which out due Canadian products and Europe has followed suit . Remember Klipsh , Jaguar , Porsche , Mitsuishi , Toyota etc ? You are right about Walmart they are just another victim of CEOs and Management who don't want to find themselves with less profit next year . Better go Bomb Iran and Afghanistan and tell them they need their roads paved with gold and McDonalds drive throughs because I'm finding it harder to afford the least quality on the planet .

Well I guess as one of the resident bluenosers here I ought to weigh in on this. Speaking as someone whose jobs have always entailed working on Sundays and hopefully on behalf of the thousands of people already required to work Sunday ( you know....cops, fire fighters nurses, docs, paramedics, military, casino employees, corner store clerks, video store employees, airport employees, bar staff, cold beer store staff etc etc...holy shit this list is long) I gotta say......... So what's new? Sunday is just the first day on the calender.

Oh and Alta....what bible belt are you talking about? Nova Scotia? ROTFL ROTFL ROTFL ROTFL ROTFL ROTFL ROTFL

Maybe you didn't read my post, where I said we held a plebiscite and the majority of Nova Scotians voted against Sunday Shopping. I supported this, and I'm the most unreligious person on this forum.

We liked the day off on Sunday. The folks in Halifax didn't, which is understandable, and having grocery stores open on weekends would be beneficial, but I didn't have a problem with it, and neither did most.

That was one that nobody really ever understood. The expression we always used was, "You can lose your shirt on a Sunday, but you can't buy one".

The major difference though is that a lot of the professions you described are usually shift work - they're getting their days off, and then some.

Tell ya what BlueNose, if you like your Sunday's off then fine, take them off. No one is sticking a gun to your head and telling you that you must shop on a Sunday. You want to stay home, fine, just don't expect me too. I, like most of us out here in the West, WORK DURING THE WEEK AND MOST TIMES ON SATURDAY TOO UPTO 14 HOURS A DAY. It's not my fault that the state of unemployment welfare on the East Coast allows you people to have all this time during the week to go shopping.

As far as a place where the plebicite goes there are two mitigating factors there.
1. If it's such a big kufuffle to be open on a Sunday then there would be staffing issues on Sundays forcing the stores to stay closed.
2. If being open on a Sunday is such an offense to the members of the community then said stores would not make enough money to warrent staying open on Sundays for long.

Here's the harsh reality, you may not agree with it, but its truth. If Wallmart was open at 3 am, people would be there shopping. As much as a community bitches and complains, open the malls on a certain day and they will come. One need look no further than Thunder Bay Ontario where the malls were closed on Boxing Day. When in 1995 the mall on the mall was allowed to be open for the first time, much to the chigrin of the local populace guess what happend? Give up? IT WAS PACKED!!!!!!!!! Stores recorded record profits. If the whole community was against this then why was INTERCITY mall jammed packed?

Something we realized a long time ago out our way of the country was that a free and open economic environment where business was allowed to be open when they wanted to be breeds a healty economy. If we are truely living in a free market, capitalist country, which we love to say we are, then we can not limit business by saying "Sorry, you're too big to be open." It is our duty as citizens of a capitalist country to support an enviornemt where business is allow to sucseed or fail for that matter. It is not up to us or our governments to tell business they can not be open when they feel they can make sales. If they can't because the community is against it, then the store or service will close on that day voluntarily or fail. Simple as that.

Not being open on Sunday's by the way, is a throw back to a time when the whole community was church going, and needed the support of the church and godfearing people to be elected. So for you to tell me that being forceable closed on what is the traditional Christian day of rest is not about religion is ridiculous, and maybe it is you sir that needs to remove his head from his ass.

I didn't read your post past this point. You're an idiot. I never once asked you to stay home on Sunday, nor did I say I didn't agree with the decision to remove the ban. I will be happy to be able to go shopping on my days off.

Looking at the threads I've posted in, it seems you've gone on a rampage, taking jabs at me and my region like a child. You're really quite immature when it comes to dealing with other points of view.
