Exactly. Shit like this happened back during the late 1980s, when some yahoos trampled on a Quebec flag in Brockville.
That made the news...but what didn't make the news, from what I heard the guys who did it weren't even from Brockville, and that city's mayor actually went to Quebec to issue a public apology.

In fact, there is a possibility that a referendum may not survive the internet ... or it could be lost because of it. Everything has changed since a pissed Parizeau blamed it on everyone but himself.

I misinterpreted your reference to the "Filles du roi" and thought that you were insulting people based on their ancestry.
As for the prostitutes/orphans thing, it was only after you corrected me that I realized where I'd heard that original claim-namely, Mordecai Richler.
I'd first heard the claim in university, and I subsequently came across other writings that pointed out how Richler's claim was full of it, even even though that didn't stop Richler from repeating it.
Again, mea culpa on that one.
