Ahhh, that's right, let's deny services to anyone who doesn't speak English...brilliant.

Thank god this moron lives in England and not Canada.

I lived overseas for years and I always tried to use the native language when possible, but sometimes, it's easier to use your own when at the bank, post office, whatever.

Tell me, regarding the article. What if that dude couldn't speak her mothers language? Because most people cannot. OUR official language is english and that is what should be used when going about your daily buisness.

If they want to talk something else with there friends or relatives or at home. That's there buisness but they are in a ENGLISH speaking country and it's required of them to learn and use english to function in the country.

English is the global language of communication in Canada except Quebec. If everybody diddn't learn english and just kept to there mother's language. How the hell is the country suppose to function and communicate? They wouldn't understand each other except for the selective few that actually know there language.

Are we all suppose to learn like 50 languages just to understand and accomindate immigrants who don't want to speak english in a english country? Fuck no, those immigrants came here and they have to accomidate with Canada and in Canada we speak english and french.

From the gist of the article, it sounds that he could have accomodated her, he simply choose not to. Whatever, that's his (and the country of Britain's choice) but being rude to people is a reason why British people are rated as some of the rudest people on the planet.

I never said that the post office has to provide service in 100 different languages, but if you can, then there's no reason why you shouldn't. It's called customer service, though not many Britons know SFA about that topic...

And you expect everybody to speak YOUR language? While you chose to be in THEIR country?
The arrogance...

Arrogant? Hardly...

I never said I expected to speak English, just that sometimes people were willing to be flexible, which this asshole obviously is not.
I think it is pretty arrogant to expect people to speak all the languages in the world.
I also think, since English is a global language, it is pretty arrogant to NOT want to speak that language when you are in another country.
I think it is even more arrogant to refuse to speak the language to the country you emigrated to, and expect everyone to speak the language you grew up with.
I think it is pretty arrogant for (for example) a German person, to expect ME, being IN Holland, to speak German. They can either speak Dutch or English.

Suck it up, learn the language, or the global one.

With your logic, you better freakin fast start to learn Dutch, and serve me in MY language. Flexibility on your part, not on mine, because I am an immigrant, I don't have to. Oh, and while you are at it, give me my welfare cheque. And I want the explanation that comes with it in Dutch.
Got my point now?
Don't expect everybody to bend to your sorry ass.

I don't expect anyone to "bend to your sorry ass".

There's a little thing called customer service, and if you can help someone in their native language, then so be it.

You know, I called the CRA International Tax office yesterday for a friend to clarify something so he could do his taxes, and low and behold, they told me they had a native speaker on staff who spoke his language (Mandarin). Where's the crime in that?

If the CRA had someone who spoke Dutch (or Swahili or any other language), then why not offer the service to you? I know my office has someone who speaks Dutch fluently (she came here in the 70s). If one of our customers asked for help in Dutch, she would offer it. Just like when I worked with the AMA, I provided services in Japanese.

There's a reason why many people consider the Brits rude. This is a big one...

No, he can refuse service if he wants to because people who work in Britain such as the Post office grew up learning English as there first language and probally won't know anything else.

If he knows a language that a customer knows than that's lucky of the customer but he has the right to either tolerate the service in that language or ask the customer to do it in english. Seeing how Britain is a English speaking nation and all immigrants are required to learn it. Those customers should know english even a little bit and should do it all in english.

Immigrants can't immigrate to a country and expect everybody to accomidate to there customs and languages. When people immigrate to a new country, they have to adopt there rules and languages. It comes with the territory.

So since English is Required and all citizens should know it. I don't see why it's such a bother for those customers to speak in english? If they refuse to speak english and why can't the guy refuse service? One refusal for another.

Way to attack one line. Why not attack my argument that to be served in ones native language in a foreign country is a privledge, and not a right?

We certainly don't see Brenda walking around everywhere expecting to be served in her native language. She had to take the time and make the effort to learn English in order to live here comfortably. If an immigrant isn't willing to do that for themselves, they certainly aren't worth their salt for this country, and certainly do not deserve myself or anyone else to go through the effort, however big or small, of serving them in the language they are comfortable in.

That's my response to your hypebole.
