Legit Case of just a bunch of whining?

hurley_108 @ Wed Mar 18, 2009 12:26 pm

Legit. Made especially so by being kicked out for being "insubordinate."

It's Iowa so they may have a chance enforcing language proficiency laws.

Is this for enrolling in some kind of study?

I have to take a test and prove my proficiency in English before I can enroll in any study, college or uni-level.

Students shouldn't have to take tests. It might give them stress factors in their lives, being held to impossible standards. Next thing, society will want accomplishments, and after that *deep breath!* Successes!

We can't impose actual goals on our children! That is just mean!

Yea, because it's the state's business what language you speak.

Proficiency tests aside, from the brief quote, I already know she's more proficient than you. :)

Here's a brief English proficiency test for everyone here:

What's the difference between "their," "there," and "they're"?

This girl is being a PIA, cause she is 'special'

That being said, lots of kids graduate American schools without
basic English literacy skills.. American kids too.

Universities in Slovakia have their own entrance exams,
cause the secondary system cant be trusted anymore.

Shouldn't she need to be proficient in the official language of the state?

I see so many mistakes in forums, people mixing and matching the 3.

Another common mistake: "you're" and "your".
_____ an ass.
Get _____ ass in here.

If I was her, and this test had no bearing on my grades or eligibility to graduate, I'd just go any deliberately do as badly as I could.

It's the same in Canada. When I was in my first-year english class at university, the prof had to do a refresher on basic grammar - not for the foreign students, for the locals.

Is it that bad in the 'States, though?

Correct, correct, and correct. :)

Hrrrm. It seems like a simple test that is administered to whomever chooses English as a second language. What is demeaning about it? It may be absurdly easy, or even dumb, but the State can't be expected to make an exception simple because she doesn't like it. Then you end up with a double-standard, which is irritating for everyone.

"Official languages" are a bullshit concept. They cause more trouble than they solve. Just look at the bellyaching over Quebec's language laws as their official language is French. Go read Geoffrey Pullum's essay "Here come the linguistic fascists" for a better smackdown than I can give. It's not online, though.

No, they're trying to FORCE a double standard - one for those whose mother tongue is English, and another for everyone else.
