Liberal NDP Coalition Government

I don't like coalition governments in general.
Trying to crash two distinctly separate ideologies into something workable by either usually means a bill to lower taxes results in a new paint job for the PM's door.
watered down and toothless.

But without some sort of merger or Coalition in the future, with the emergance of the greens and the bloc not going away, I don't see how any party will be able to get a majority anytime in the forseable future, so a Coalition might be the only way to form a stable government.
A coalition is only a stable government as long as all parties involved see it to their best advantage. The moment one sees an advantage of going alone it falls apart. In this case the Liberals would call an election the moment they think they could win enough seats to form a government on their own.
Coalitions tend to be short term deals between parties that do not like each other. They cannot play nice long enough to have a stable government. The world markets would react to the uncertainty and the dollar would fall as would the TSX.
Caelon, nice to see some of you are capable of posting on-topic constructive posts and not just partisan one-liners and personal attacks.

Don't you think Canadaka that the split vote is an issue?
Layton has ran the best campaign and the NDP surge is going to hurt the Liberals. The Tories only stand to gain from the NDP surge.
When this was a Reform/PC is issue it was a real benefit to Chretien. I think it's been under examined as an outcome on this one. The Tories are going to gain the most from Jack's popularity.

i am predicting 135 for CPC, 85 for libs followed by the Bloc THEN NDP
might not even be any green seats but I am sure their # votes will increase.
I would LOVE to see 155 for the CPC but...

If you are correct then the NDP would be under 40 seats and would not have enough for a Lib/NDP coaliton option.

Not to pick a nit or anything but it's only our fucked-up national media that keeps saying the NDP ran a terrific campaign, just like they keeping saying that Elizabeth May (who is nothing but a flaky lightwight of Sarah Palin-esque dimensions) is some kind of super-dynamic "breath of fresh air" (see Mike Duffy for all sorts of this type of idiocy). Let's not forget that the NDP had to get rid of four candidates during the campaign after it was revealed that they were up to all sorts of goofy and mostly illegal nonsense in their private lives (including one borderline pedophile who like exposing himself in front of younger teenagers at summer camp) that disqualified them from being Parliamentary material. The NDP right now, just like they've always been and always will be, are all gas and no burrito. The usual love-in that the media threw for them this election, just like the media does for them every time we have an election, just doesn't cover up the reality that the NDP doesn't even qualify as a substantial opposition party much less one that'll ever be ready to form a government for Canada.
Canadaka Canadaka:
They are talking on Mike Duffy Live about IF the conservatives win this election, which they most likely will, that some people are suggesting the Liberals and NDP should form a Coalition and take down the goverment on the first confidence motion. Then go to the Govenor General and ask her to sweear in a Liberal NDP Coalition Government.
They also make the point that since Dion's job will most likely be on the line and that layton has had numerous trys and the NDP hasn't moved much, they might have reasons to do this for self preservation reasons as well.
Being a fairly left-wing Liberal I would personaly support this and is pretty much the only way the NDP will ever get a cabinet minister. But i think the chance of this happening are probably below 10%.
But without some sort of merger or Coalition in the future, with the emergance of the greens and the bloc not going away, I don't see how any party will be able to get a majority anytime in the forseable future, so a Coalition might be the only way to form a stable government.
This is not without president and is within the realm os the possible. I think its happened 2 times in Canada's history and I think has happened for Provincial goverments.
I think this is a great idea.
I mean of the Reform Party (kkk Canada) and the old Conservative Party of Canada can join and form a new Conservative Right Wing Nut Job Party.. why not the NDP/Liberals.

eh?
Was it the part where I insulted the Conservative Party, or the part where I agreed with Trev (aka Canadaka) about the concept of the NDP/Liberal coalition gov't?
To be honest, I like the idea of a basically a 2 party system, simular to the USA (Dems vs. Rep)
A little more left leaning party The New Liberal Party and the Conservatives.
I can assure you the NLP would win.

I can only remember it happening in provincial politics. I think it happened to a lesser degree once Federal in politics back during WW I (or maybe it was WW II) but that was a bit of a different situation all together. (I'm no history buff so if I'm wrong feel free to correct me)
I could all most see it happening with the Libs and the Greens but the NDP? I'm not saying it couldn't happen but it seems a bit out there since they seem to be worlds apart on some key issues such as the environment and corporate tax cuts. But the Libs might have some pretty heavy debts after this election and it might be seen as an option to them as opposed to waiting for two to four years. If there ever was a time it could happen it would be now.
If it did I can't see it being successful for to long. We'd be back at the polls in a couple of years. I think what is more likely is the Libs will pick a new leader. I don't think it even matters who they pick, by the time the next election rolls around the electorate will be ready for a change and they will all most be guarantied a win unless they come out with some radical policies that prove to be unpopular.
i am for a coalition with the liberals and ndp and even green party. at least for a few years to stabilize canada
