Nope, they'll do what was done last time there was a pandemic... Cancel the rest of the season. No cup winner declared

stratos @ Thu Mar 12, 2020 8:18 am

Have they done anything yet. NBA is over this season. NCAA tournaments will be in empty stadiums (no fans in the stands). Talk of delaying football free agency for at least 2 weeks.

This might fit here:

$1:
The World Curling Federation is closely monitoring developments regarding coronavirus outbreaks around the globe, but at this time, it has no plans to cancel any of its upcoming events, including the world women’s championship in Prince George, B.C.

So, I say let's see if anybody lives here before we decide to cancel hockey.

When I went on my lunch break today the NHL status was the first thing I checked on my phone.

Then I was :(

$1:
The NHL is awaiting the result of a players' vote on a 24-team playoff format before discussing its options on how to proceed in its bid to resume play.

With the NHL Players' Association executive board could release the results of its vote as early as Friday, but numerous questions remain whatever the decision is.

They include potential game locations, when players can return to their respective teams and what non-playoff teams will be allowed to do during what could potentially become a 10-month break between games.

$1:
Under the plan proposed by the NHL/NHLPA Return To Play committee, the top four teams in each conference would play each other in a mini-tournament for seeding while the remaining 16 teams face off in a best-of-five series play-in round to set the final 16 to compete for the Stanley Cup.

Games would likely be played without fans present, and the teams grouped in hub cities around the continent. Las Vegas has become the city most mentioned as a potential site, particularly because of its large concentration of hotels that could house numerous teams.

As much as I miss hockey and am bummed out at not being able to watch the playoffs I say fuck it, the season is done, no one wins the cup this year. See ya in September... maybe...

Thanos @ Fri May 22, 2020 6:27 pm

Same. Too much actual important shit going on to waste time thinking about pro sports.

Strutz @ Fri May 22, 2020 7:54 pm

Even though they are suggesting having the games only in a few cities there are things to consider:

- Teams would have to go to (insert city) and whether in Canada or the USA there are currently border crossing restrictions. Sorry, but pro sports shouldn't qualify as "essential" for travel. These restrictions are in place until late June at this point.

- Even if they move forward with this idea would the players have to quarantine for 2 weeks after arrival to wherever their team is going to play? (or perhaps have to for 2 weeks before they travel).

- Once deemed healthy the players are going to need some practice time to re-connect with their teammates. They haven't been able to workout like they used to and certainly are unlikely to have had ice access for the last 2+ months.

- No spectators allowed so how in hell will the teams/league make any money? I'm assuming the games would be televised so there would be some advertising revenue but is that enough to make all the effort worth it?

A month later..... 8O

No hub for Vancouver, it looks like the NHL wants a really long leash
for dealing with any cases that pop up.

I highly doubted Vancouver would be a hub city anyway. Why they even tried to be one is beyond me.

As much as I miss watching hockey, the NHL should just drop the whole notion of finishing the season anyway. As far as I'm concerned the season ended on March 12th. They can't just create a playoff tournament based on standings as of the last games played. The playoff race was so tight and we'll never know which teams would have been legitimately in or out of claiming a spot to advance. The momentum is gone and there's no going back to continue it now.

Simply, there will be no Stanley Cup winner for 2019/20. Oh well.

See what happens in September/October and just start the new season.

There was no Cup awarded in 1919 so it shouldn't be an issue but, health should be.

If anyone thinks that it's a good idea bringing a bunch of hockey player together from all over the world during a pandemic, then let them live in close confines while play a contact sport where bodily fluids fly with every hit, then given that criteria the rest of country should be able to open up wit alot less safety requirements.

My guess is that it's all about the money for lower income teams which means Betman is willing to follow the WWE health and safety model which has proven to be a failure leading to numerous wrestlers being hit hard with Covid 19.

Bettman has 30 owners baying at him to do some kind of re-opening because of all the money they've lost so far. Doing a playoff series makes some money back for them. Not much, but enough to probably keep their heads above water until 2020-21 can kick off (if it does). Understandable viewpoint, if completely ignorant of the realities of COVID, because all the teams have laid off most of their front-office staffers already due to the closures. Not Bettman's fault this time around, or anyone else to tell the truth. The NHL got mugged by a new reality the same way everyone else did thanks to the epidemic.
