NHL pre-season games are underway this week and the 2019-20 season officially begins on October 2nd.

Let's try something new this season on cka. Rather than have individual threads going about a specific team or news-worthy incidents let's try having one thread for everything and anything about your favorite NHL team(s) and related recaps, articles and banter.

Here's hoping that all of our Canadian-based teams make the playoffs this season and cap it off with an exciting west conference vs east conference battle for the cup!

All across the country fans of every team are saying "how about we get rid of the regular players altogether and let the kids from training camp play the whole season". Ah, fans, so loyally gullible and blissfully unprepared for yet another year of disappointment!

The Vancouver vs Calgary, split squad, preseason games in Calgary and Vancouver were fun.

In both games Vancouver came back from impressive deficits. They won in Calgary and a late period rush from the squad in Vancouver brought them back to within a point at 4-3. Peppering the goaltender in the dying seconds but too little, too late.

Good news for Vancouver though. Boeser was signed finally and Jake Virtanen redeemed himself from coming to camp under the bar the coach had set for his fitness. Virtanen still got 2 goals and was the difference in the Calgary game. Go Jake.

When are going to see Canadian teams getting to the business end of the Stanley Cup again?

I was pleasantly surprised by the signing of Boeser. I had assumed with the delay in getting signed that he'd be leaving Vancouver if he got a better offer elsewhere, in particular somewhere closer to his hometown. I hope it works out well as he is one of my favorite players.

I only saw the third period last night but yes, I agree, Virtanen looked pretty good.

Vancouver at Edmonton

7:00pm start time

1-0 Edmonton after the 1st period. Ouch. But Vancouver ended the period strong. Fingers still crossed. Stupid Draisaitl is playing like a beast.

N_Fiddledog @ Wed Oct 02, 2019 9:11 pm

Tied up in the third. Here's hoping it stays that way.

3 on 3 overtime. McDavid, Draisaitl and whoever against Pettersson, Boeser and Hughes. It will be classic.

N_Fiddledog @ Wed Oct 02, 2019 9:28 pm

2-2 and I was thinking, 'Gee, McDavid has been quiet tonight."

And just as I was thinking that...

3-2 Edmonton.

Matthews scored twice again last night, he has 9 goals in the last 4 season openers.

Strutz @ Thu Oct 03, 2019 9:50 am

Well the Canucks outshot the Oilers but Smith made some great saves.

Hughes was impressive though.

N_Fiddledog @ Thu Oct 03, 2019 10:02 am

It was a pretty watchable game.

If I was the Calgary Flames I'd be worried. Both teams seemed to be much improved from last year.

:( I didn't get to watch any games but I did catch some on the radio. It was a bad night for me. :(
