The AJHL Playoffs are underway!!
The Grande Prairie Storm have started the defence of their AJHL title against the Lloydminster Bobcats on Thursday night. (And in what seems like a "tradition" now, all the Storm players dyed their hair BLONDE!!) Talk about a special way to start off the playoffs, Lanny MacDonald came to the game and did the opening faceoff.
Lots of kids, young and old alike, got autographs from Lanny, it was pretty cool.
The game Thursday was an interesting one, the Storm opened up a 4-1 lead going into the third period, but seemed to take their foot off the gas and let the Bobcats back in. Final score....

Friday night, the Storm and Bobcats were back at it again. After a tight, no scoring first period, the Storm came on in the second. The Bobcats opened the scoring in the second, but then, Dennis Rix decided he had had enough of that. Rix scored a natural hat-trick in the second period and the score was 3-2 Storm after 40 minutes. Rix then scored his fourth goal of the night, the game winner, 11 minutes into the third. The Bobcats made it interesting getting to within one, but an empty net goal finished the night as the Storm went on to win....

The next game is today in Lloydminster. The Storm could sweep the best of five game series today.

The long bus ride home will be a little easier for the Storm.
Grande Prairie jumped out to an early lead and never let up, advancing to the second round of the AJHL playoffs with a 4-1 win over the Bobcats in Lloydminster.
Matt Williams, Dan Correale, Taylor Rovatti and Travis Dunstall provided the offence for the Storm while Chad Carder made 24 saves.
The Storm notched three goals on the power play and allowed just one power play goal for the Bobcats.
“It was the first game that really had that playoff feel,” said head coach Mike Vandekamp. “It was more intense, more physical. We were prepared for that. We knew they were going to have a lot of life.

Man Camrose are in a dog fight with Calgary, 5th game tonight, 3 OT games in the series so far. No score posted as of this time.

Camrose defeated the Calgary Royals 3-1 last night taking the 5 game series 3-2. They sure gave them a run for their money, didn't think Camrose would have a issue with the Royals, but then again I didn't think Okotoks would finish first in the south division.

Rosie and I went to the first game of round two tonight against the Ft Mac Oil Barons. No question about it, it was an entertaining game. Hard fought, great plays, lots of big hit and pretty damn fine goal tending at both ends. Just too bad those mollusks from the far north of Alberta won the game...

Game two of the second round series between the Grande Prairie Storm and the Ft. Mac. Sludge Monkey's (Sorry, Oil Barons) went tonight. Rosie and I watched a very hard fought, emotionally charged game with some great play, awesome goals and a fair tad of extracurricular activity.
The difference tonight! The good guys WON!!!!!!

.....4..........2The series is now tied at one a piece and now moves up that utterly lonely stretch of highway to Ft. Mac. for games 3 and 4. Here's hoping our boys just come back with only two wins and no funky diseases from that quaint little northern town...

It's do or die for the Storm the rest of the way. Down 3-1 in the series they have to sweep the final 3 games to get to the next round. They had a 14 game winning streak during the regular season, 3 wins in a rows is sure doable...

The Storm will be fighting for their playoff lives when they return to the Canada Games Arena Sunday.
James Isaacs scored the game-winner in the second period, as the Oil Barons edged the Storm 3-2, to take a 3-1 lead in their second-round series.
Taylor Rovatti and Josh Phillips scored for the Storm, who started the game without forward Travis Dunstall. Dunstall was given a one game suspension for allegedly pushing an official on his way to the penalty box Thursday night.
Grande Prairie went 0-for-6 on the power play and allowed three goals with the man advantage.
"There have been a lot of special teams in this series so far," said head coach Mike Vandekamp. “We had the best line on the ice in the first period. Then two thirds of that line spent more than half of the second period in the box. It seems like the wind gets taken out of our sails.
“Their penalty killers did a good job. We still have to get a little bit more fire in our eyes. Your key players have to get the job done.”
Final shots on goal were 34-27 in favour of the Storm.

Well, no easy way to make this post I can tell ya. Tonight, it was do or die for the Storm. Rosie and I both commented on the intensity and raw emotion in the Canada Games Arena for this game.
Nether team disappointed as this was the toughest fought, tightest played game of this season. After one period..1-1...shots...13-11 in favor of Grande Prairie. After two periods.....2-2.....shots...11-7 in favor of the Storm. At the end of regulation....2-2....shots....11-5 in favor of the Oil Barons. Half way through the second overtime period.....The Oil Barons finished the series.
Final shots.....38-37 in favor of the Storm.

On the upside, Olympic silver medalist Kristie Moore, who was part of the Canadian women’s curling team, did drop the ceremonial puck.
That was kinda cool.
