Ok it would be pretty hard for the Canadian Men's team to get beat, so let's look at women's hockey.

Seems to me the the American team has a pretty good shot. I think the Canadian team is threatened not only by USA, but also by Sweden and Findland. It would be so cool for the American women to win gold at the Olympics, but I would rather Canada win than Sweden or Finland.

I am not the hockey expert, so I am asking for some honest opinions. Give your Canadian ra ra, then give an honest assessment.

I am using this forum instead of the sports forum, because I figure more American's would be here to respond.

Thanks - Rux.

The two teams have always been very close to each other, but really they are the only real contenders at Torino. The rest of them are sorta like a Spanish curling team

PluggyRug @ Thu Feb 02, 2006 11:50 am

no...however they are always great close matches.

Ruxpercnd @ Thu Feb 02, 2006 11:58 am

I think this contest is going to be exciting to watch. I just hope that we get good tv coverage.

Fortunately, in the past, we got Canadian TV Olympics coverage which was clearly superior.

Wullu @ Thu Feb 02, 2006 12:06 pm

NBC's coverage in the past has sucked large for sure. About half the time was spent on athlete profiles it seemed. To give the devil its due the CBC covers other than just sports Canadians are participating in.

Shouldn't that post be in the religeon thread.

Some Tv coverage has far to many commercials.

Drunk Canuck @ Thu Feb 02, 2006 12:15 pm

They always tade back and forth, so it could go either way. So yes there is a good chance they could win.

As far as the TV coverage this year, it will be tough to actually see any hockey games. I don't know about the womens games, but the men's games are all on at 8 am because of the time difference. Gold medal game and all.

hmm sort of a self proclaimed expert on women's hockey .... I think Canada has a great chance of repeating so long as three things happen they dominate on special teams. KimSt. Pierre has a strong set of games especially against Team USA. Canada has a larger vetern presence.. So long as Danielle goyette, Hayley Vicki sunohara, hefford, botterill and campbell can lead them they will get through. They have the young guns of Apps, vaillancourt , weatherston and Agosta.
On D the of course have kellar, pounder, ouellette and sostorics a veteran older defence.

Team USA had the departure of Cammi Granato after camp (kinda like when canada dropped Angela James).. USA has gone to a younger group.... they have speed to BURN. Ben Smith has done an excellent job with them as well. Girls to watch off thier roster. USA goaltender Chandra Gunn, natalie Darwitz, Krissy wendell, kelly stephens, and youngster Sarah parsons

All depends who brings thier game on the Gold medal day. Sweden Finland, Russia, and switzerland and all prohibitive longshots... you can almost write off italy and germany.
I think Canada will prevail. in Torino. but for many of our older players this may be the last kick at the can. 2010 in vancouver we will have a younger crew at home trying to win it all on home ice... that's going to be a lot of pressure on them against a US team that only seems to be getting better every year.

Tman1 @ Thu Feb 02, 2006 12:58 pm

I applaud our women's hockey team and they are great but sorry to say it's getting a tad boring with just US/Canada final games. That's just me I suppose but still we need more competetion in the European teams and I know they just started to develop their teams but come on.

bootlegga @ Thu Feb 02, 2006 3:51 pm

I think it will come down to who has a better day. The teams are so close that it could go either way. Of course, I'm rooting for the Canucks, but the US ladies took it in 1998, so who knows?

I have to agree with Canucker in that all the other teams are a really long shot. In Salt Lake, the Chinese (or maybe it was the Finnish) were supposed to have incredible goaltending, but both the US and Canada lit them up like Christmas trees.

Ruxpercnd @ Thu Feb 02, 2006 10:12 pm

It looks like the CBC broadcasts live and re-broadcast for primetime. The CBC schedule for the final is:
Hockey - Women's Gold
Monday, February 20, 2006, 2:30 p.m.
Olympic Afternoon: Day 10

(Live Full Network) Ron MacLean hosts the Olympic Afternoon live telecast.

themasta @ Thu Feb 02, 2006 10:54 pm

Don't be silly, women can't play hockey? Where would they find the time in between cooking, cleaning and having kids?

twister @ Fri Feb 03, 2006 2:31 am

wow both gideon and themasta have really shown something... how about "ignorance" it's a game... anyone and everyone should be allowed to play a game. If you don't like it tough.. no one is asking you to take 5 minutes out of your day and support anything.. put your head back in the sand and think back to the day when dinosaurs ruled the earth.. welcome home...
