Multiculturalism is cool to a point, until it becomes overboard. Like those dumbasses in Ontario who wanted to have state-sanctioned Sharia law courts... What are they fucking nuts? Those idiots should have had their passports taken away just for asking... because that in and of itself shows their lack of respect for Canadian institutions and of the supremacy of the Canadian Constitution and its Charter of Rights and Freedoms. There is one law and it goes for everyone... no parallel court systems.

Now, I think what happened there is a misunderstanding of what multiculturalism is supposed to mean. It's supposed to mean that cultural communities come here and ADD something to the Canadian context, while at the same time integrating into the Canadian way of life.

And you cannot blame just immigrants and multicultural policy for the erosion of Canadian culture and distinctiveness... You have to put most of the blame on Canadians themselves for their own cultural cringe, and their creepy addiction to all things south of the border.

If Canadians respected their own culture, traditions and history more in the first place, Canada would never have accepted the multiculturalism policy. And that's right... they accepted it. It wasn't big, bad Pierre Trudeau who forced it on everyone. Canadians liked him, and gave him 2 majority governments and one minority with the NDP holding the balance of power. Canada was clearly moving through one of its frequent leftist periods.

They just asked for what was already available to more Traditional Religions. They weren't nuts, Ontario's Laws were.

Multiculturalism is and was a mistake. it cost too much and is detrimental to the progression of immigrants integration into
Canadian society... I am all for immigration ... but we have to be more selective.. I mean selling roses on Yonge St in Toronto doesnt cut it. also the issue of language.. I am in favour of families keeping their language etc. but it should be law that immigrants have to learn english or if in Quebec french.. the rules of the game need to be tightened and the time period for citizenship should be increased.

Thats fucking hilariously ironic when someone that is french shows their distaste for multiculturalism.

I'm sorry, I wasn't aware there were any parallel courts operating in Canada. See, I was just under the impression that we have one law, and one court system to interpret that law for everyone. Notwithstanding the Civil Code of Quebec, of course.

But if you can point me to the Jewish or Christian or Buddhist court systems operating with legal sanction along side our traditional courts in this country, I'll be happy check it out.

Canada has always been multicultural anyway, from the beginning. There have always been ethnic communities co-existing here since the beginning. Natives, English, French, Scottish, Irish, Ukrainian, Scandinavian, German, Russian, Yiddish, West Indian, Black American etc...

These communities came and established themselves, and their children became Canadians but didn't necessarily lose all ties to their parents' culture.

Now that the doors are open to non-European cultures, people are getting less and less tolerant, and that is wrong.

However, I think both Canadians and Immigrants misunderstand what Multiculturalism is supposed to mean.

It doesn't mean you come here and close yourself off into isolated communities and ghettos. It means you may bring your culture, but you submit to our laws and adapt.
