I read those same stats. I also know that the 2006 Census is ongoing and soon those stats will be available. The numbers you quoted are from the last Census. If my memory serves me correctly, the Census is done once every four years. A lot can change in four years...Just ask the Liberals!

Census numbers won't change that much in 4 years. To think so is ignorant.

Four years in Vancouver saw several thousand citizens from Asia make roots. In four years time, 2.5 million people will immigrate to Canada and several hundred thousand will settle in the two major centers of Quebec. I dare say your judgement of change is a little far off. Canada is growing and each year we see a markable change to our make up. Like the USA, soon the only minority will be the white middle class.

I guess my view of change must be ignorant if I believe we are changing enough every four year to see significant changes to our population. These changes will make French and English minority languages soon if things continue the way they are. I know the french 10, 11, and 12 classes at my daughters high school are near empty. Last September they actually wewnt from planning 4 classes for French 12 to having only one. Even then it was only half full. The requests for Spanish and Chinese were so many the school board made room for instructors from other districts. Many came from Vancouver who had teaching certificates from outside Canada. The kids want languages that will actually be relevant when they get out of school. To get them these languages we are now looking outside the box to accomondate the kids.

Who here would be interessted in learning some french from french-speaking CKA members?

What I'm suggesting is some daily lessons; simple words, short phrases, basic vocabulary....Here is an example:

English word or phrase -> French definition -> an idea of what it sounds like/pronounced

Sun -> Soleil -> Sole hey

Computer -> Ordinateur -> Or dee nah tur

Welcome -> Bienvenue -> Bee ey vah new

I hope -> J'espère - > Jess pair

So? What do you guys think?

I think we’ve all had enough French with forced bilingualism and all. With an Albertan at the con perhaps we should all try and learn a little redneck.

Slough – Pond – Slew

Coulee – Prairie Geographical Depression - Cooly

Kovbasa – Ukrainian Garlic Sausage (Even served in stands at Eskimos games) – Ko-baa-saw

Prit’near – Pretty Nearly. (ie, fell off the barn and prit’near broke my arm)

Bastard – Individual from Eastern Canada

Fuckin’ Bastard – Person from Toronto

Fuckin’ Cock-suckin’ Bastard – Downtown Toronto to be precise.

And here's the problem. Forced language instruction reminds me of the Nazi party forcing the German way of life on all of Europe. Perhaps a little extreme, but I'm sure you get the picture.

But all is not lost. Soon the French in Quebec will have to learn Chinese...

How about posting lessons for actual international languages that will be still functional in the future such as Spanish or Chinese? All signs indicate that those, along with English, will be what people really need to know in the new global economy.

The Global economy is important, but our own Nation comes first.

Either French should be taught manditorally in k-12 schools across the country, or we should have just English as our language. The latter makes more sense to me, since we beat the crap out of the French and the English took over and won.
