Current-day monetary structures are not zero-sum. When the currencies were on gold and silver standards it was true that if someone got rich someone else had to get poor. But not anymore. In the USA another $100 million or so is added to the economy every day by the Federal Reserve and Canada does the same thing on a proportionately similar scale.

But to say capitalism sucks? Not at all. Capitalism allows YOU to work hard and innovate and profit freely from your innovation. You reap what you sow,

So-called 'progressive' tax rates mean that rich people ideally should be subsidizing poor people, but they get their loopholes and most of them pay less in taxes than those in the bottom 10% of income earners.

A flat tax where everyone pays the same percentage of income with no loopholes and no deductions would have rich people paying more than they pay today and poor people would pay less except for the very poor who would now be contributing to the systems they depend on. As well they should.

   

killing the loop holes is neccisary, if nothing else. Even with a flat tax the uber-rich still have billlions to bribe the government with.

   

Then let's take the argument to the end game.

A maximum wage law.

Since the fact that people can be "rich" pisses off Communists then implement a maximum wage law and a maximum assets law.

Make it illegal to earn anymore than a certain amount in any given year.

Make it so that anyone who has over a certain value in assets has those assets seized by the government.

Then there'll be no "rich" people to piss you off because everyone will be poor.

   

Yup thats called communism.

   

Since we don't have Socialism, how can you know if you prefer it? We have capitalism with social programs, paid for by working people who would mostly rather be spending their money in other ways. Cambodia under Pol Pot had Socialism, Russia under Josef Stalin, Albania under Enver Hoxha, China under Mao, all had Socialism. Want to live like that?

I came here hoping to find some useful dialogue, but I am seeing the usual boring mental midgets with a headful of garbage, propaganda sponges with no ability to think for themselves. A bunch of yapping parrots who repeat what their masters have taught them. Conspiracy theory, knee-jerk anti-Americanism, all the things that make me embarrassed to be a Canadian. This used to be a great country, or at least a damn good one, until a huge chunk of the population was afflicted by an epidemic of whatever it is that turns people into chickenshit whiners and bloodsuckers.

Thinking is a dying art that requires practice, and I have no hope most of the people here - or anywhere - will ever learn it. Being jerked around by the media, both mainstream and underground, over trivialities that will be fogotten in ten years, is no way to live. There is so much more you could be doing with your one life, your one mind, and you are pissing it all away! We were born here to learn, not to repeat back whatever we're told by strangers!

This is what a half-assed conveyor-belt education system has taught us to do, and it's pitiful. More grist for the nine-to-five mills, more ditch-diggers and welfare drunks. This country doesn't kick ass, it is the laughingstock of the G-8, who only let us in becaue we're so close to the Yankees. Anyway the whole idea of having to constantly explain the few tiny differences between us and the Yanks only makes us all the more pitiful; hating the Americans means hating yourself - and the only cure for that is therapy.

There's alot of socialism in Europe.

Russia preached more communism....? (more to the left of socialism) or am I wrong. Russia also had exterior forces which took them down, and for such a vast country communism did them OK, by no rationale was it freedom. Was it necessary to in order to bridge gaps in their society (How many time zones?)? Now that they have been dismantled and running under the guise of "democracy" how has that helped them? Are they much better now with the mafia running amuck?
Cuba. Another communist state. China.... communist (left of middle) and.... 1 billion strong+. What sort of system should China have to manage so many?

I am of opinion that socialism is more towards center than you think but for arguement's sake we'll say middle left and capitalism is middle right. .

England..socialism. Free healthcare, social benefits, social programs, commerce, military, social support in education. Is it really that bad having a social conscious or should it be dog eat dog? Is the top of the pyramid, the untouchables & the elitist, just in communism and non capitalistic gov'ts? You and I might never see the exclusivity of those affairs, in communism or in capitalism or dictatorships, etc..(eg George Bush has a frikin dog better treated than some Americans.) There obvious differences but also striking similarities. They're human and corruption is always accessable for the higher ranks without reprisal. I don't agree with your posts.

whats your definition of poor? $100 000 a year is a large lump of cash, even in canadian dollars. and with the government paying for nearly everything, even folks that make 35 000 a year can live richly.

So the government implements the Maximum Wage Law at $25,000.00 a year since $35,000.00 is "rich" to someone who earns only $25,000.00. But then $25,000.00 is "rich" to the Newfie who only makes $5,000.00 beating the hell out of baby seals so in the interest of egalitarianism (amazed you with the big word, didn't I?) the government makes the Maximum Wage $5,000 since any more than that is unfair to loser Newfies.

This is Communism, Comrade.

ha ha ha ha, are you blind? I said the tax would be imposed for anyone over 100 000 so it would end up that people making over 100 000 would only get 100 000 of it. Like i said earlier, a person who makes a million would only make 100 000, so they would pay 900 000 to the government. Some might call that unfair, so say they get a base of 100 000, plus 10-20% of what they earn. so that millionar would get 100 000 of their million, plus another 100 000 to 200 000 because thats 10% 20% of a million.

And the newfies who kill seals? I don't care! Aslong as they use most of the seal, like the inuit, I'm fine with it. I'm against poaching them for single body parts however.

   

Why limit what people can earn and achieve? I always am amazed at the envy of the "rich" as no one has ever been employed by a poor guy.

Stop worrying about what someone else earns and pay more attention to your own business and either be content with what you have or strive to earn more.

I used to work for US$9.00 per hour and yesterday (after a lot of hard work and years of college and effort) the job I now have gave me a US$20,000 per year raise.

I've never begrudged a 'rich' person the money they earned or even inherited. I paid more attention to my place in the world and I've worked my ass off to improve that place and it is paying off.

And come September I'll be staying at the Empress in Victoria instead of the Strathcona and making Canada a little richer before I leave.

Envy is a sin and there is good reason for that. Communism is envy run amok and 100 million people died because of it.
