Is Islam a religion of peace?
Zipperfish Zipperfish:
Meh. No more violent than the mutant breed of Christianity currently being practiced in rich western nations. Probably less violent than communism.
Here's a group of those radical Amish bastards obviously building a missile silo in rural Pennsylvania.
andyt @ Mon Aug 30, 2010 1:33 pm
Yeah right - you're going to claim kinship with the Amish. They actually practice non-violence, unlike you who seems to have found some scripture where Jesus urged his followers to arm themselves. If he did that, then he seems to be pretty confused, what with the turn the other cheek and all. Or more accurately the people who were putting words in his mouth were confused or had contradictory agendas - since they were writing the gospels years after his death.
The Amish would call you an "English" and tell you to get bet if you showed up there claiming brotherhood.

(The Amish) actually practice non-violence
Not according to some posters on this thread. And, no I do not claim any kinship with them. They are pacifist no matter what happens and if someone were to assault them they'd stand there and take it. Me, if I saw such a thing I'd not be able to stop myself from getting involved.

Wait, what? All Christians aren't part of a Jesus hive-mind? People of a particular religion don't all behave like drones?
Thank God it's only Christians that to whom individuality applies!

Nobody is "complaining" about Christians. What we are offering is proof that the standard by which you presume to "know" the evil of Islam must also damn Christianity and Judaism -- which conveniently invalidates your original argument that the three religions are somehow on different footing, ethically and politically. Beaver had it right: a fool's game, that kind of measurement.
As for Bart's list, I submit that it would take very little time at all in order to compile an equally extensive list of violent organizations operating under an explicitly Christian or Jewish banner -- and many of them with far more significance to global history, besides.

The list you provided is not of different religious orders, but the various political and military groups who all subscribe to the extremist interpretation of the religion. That is quite different from saying most muslims subscribe to extremist theory or that most muslim religous organizations are extremist.
Some groups listed are obscure, very small and/or inactive and exist on paper or the internet only.
Further, many of the Palestinian terrorist organizaitons you mentioned are not even exclusively muslim, as there are Christian Palestinians who also participate in militant opposition to Israeli occupation.
Also, having a grandmother who came from and old-fashioned Prairie Mennonite colony, I can tell you those Amish, Huderite and Mennonite purists are not always the model of pacifism they claim to be. I heard plenty of tales of abusive alcoholic hubands whose wives got more than a taste of the ol' buggy whip and one of a wife, known to be regularly beaten, who was determined by the colony's Elders to have died from a mysterious "horse trampling" that supposedly occurred in the middle of the night, conveniently explaining the battered condition of her corpse.
Here's a better question perhaps:
What exact practices of Islam do you take with such offense Bart? What particular rituals or crimes do you find so abhorrent?
edit: spelling errors fixed.

Gotta love Achmed

I posted a list of active, recognized Muslim terror groups. Feel free to post a list of
all other active, recognized terror groups and see whose list is longer.
I.m sure there have been Muslims fighting Muslims in war even before the first gulf war.

A quick google search gave me this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_terrorismFunny detail: I live in "doukhobor country", and Doukhobors were nothing more or less than terrorists. Christian terrorist. I guess the definition of terrorism is subject to interpretation
Remember what I said earlier about making sure your criticism of Islam did not extend to your own religion....
Yea you'd be amazed how often your claims don't hold up in Christianity. Maybe it's time to convert to Islam then you really could criticize it freely.

My criticism isn't with the religion itself (though I don't folow any organized religion myself) rather it's interpretation by it's leaders
