Document Details WMD Recovered In Iraq, Santorum Says
By Melanie Hunter

(CNSNews.com) - Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) and Rep. Peter Hoekstra (R-Mich.) announced Wednesday the finding of over 500 munitions or weapons of mass destruction, specifically "sarin- and mustard-filled projectiles," in Iraq.

Reading from unclassified portions of a document developed by the U.S. intelligence community, Santorum said, "Since 2003, coalition forces have recovered approximately 500 weapons munitions which contain degraded mustard or sarin nerve agent. Despite many efforts to locate and destroy Iraq's pre-Gulf War chemical munitions, filled and unfilled pre-Gulf War chemical munitions are assessed to still exist."

According to Santorum, "That means in addition to the 500, there are filled and unfilled munitions still believed to exist within the country."

Reading from the document, Santorum added, "Pre-Gulf War Iraqi chemical weapons could be sold on the Black Market. Use of these weapons by terrorist or insurgent groups would have implications for coalition forces in Iraq. The possibility of use outside of Iraq cannot be ruled out. The most likely munitions remaining are sarin- and mustard-filled projectiles. And I underscore filled."

Santorum said the "purity of the agents inside the munitions depends on many factors, including the manufacturing process, potential additives and environmental storage conditions."

While acknowledging that the agents "degrade over time," the document said that the chemicals "remain hazardous and potentially lethal."

The media has reported that "insurgents and Iraqi groups" want to "acquire and use chemical weapons," Santorum noted.

The Pennsylvania senator called the finding "incredibly" significant.

"The idea that, as my colleagues have repeatedly said in this debate on the other side of the aisle, that there are no weapons of mass destruction is in fact false," Santorum said. "We have found over 500 weapons of mass destruction and in fact have found that there are additional chemical weapons still in the country."

2 year to find them....3 more years before we hear about it? I find this hard to belive.....what specificly did they find? And what exactly do they consider a "weapon of mass destruction"....and "weapons munitions".....spent arty shells maybe? There was that war in the 80's with Iran....didnt he use them then? They still find shells in France...both spent and live no?

Yes I am being quite sceptical...as you should be Riden.....Holding back for 3 years when the question about Iraq has been...."Wheres the WMD's?" To say that they had them all that time and didnt say a fucking word? Think about it brother...or go on blindly following if you want. I'd ask a few more questions if I was you...which Im not....which proves there is a God and he likes me. :P

ridenrain @ Wed Jun 21, 2006 6:59 pm

Yes it's a long time but these are, from what I can read, artillery shells, in a big country that has been at war for a number of years. They had stockpiles all over the place so it's not unbelieveable that they were never identified as chemical shells, especially from a government that wanted to hide that they had chemical shells.

I'm thinking it's real also because there is really not much hay to make on this. You're right, it's too late. If they wanted a big bust of WMD's they would have done it way before.

This is all assuming Sen. Smuck is right though.

Ok now we know where to send these, Avro's basement (if he has one) I knew some loud mouth would pipe up.

ridenrain @ Wed Jun 21, 2006 8:56 pm

So there are no WMD there..
,but those are not realy within the time frame..
,and they must gave expired by now..
,or there not like the WMD we thought you meant when you said WMD...

They bitch that it's bush's fault if terrorists blow up a building but if they evacuate a building and it didn't blow up, they'd bitch,
and if it did blow up they'd still bitch because Bush wouldn't let them take their coat and favorite fern.
I guess for the left: For as much evil that flows out of bush's mouth, there's an equal ammount of sun shining out of hillaries ass.

LOL. What's funny is the shifting goalposts you folks are using.
Why can't any of you simply say that they might have been right about this? Would it kill you to simply admit that they were right about one thing?
Each day starts with an official military weather report that tells when the sun comes up. Do you guys want to refute that too?

Have a good day at the races.
Watch for bikes being stolen at the races. Junior cycles was ripping off harlies there, putting some more chrome crap on them then flogging them as their own custom creations.
I'm stuck into an organized ride for our local news radio. Should be a huge goat rodeo.

Look at the 'source'. CNS News? Anybody ever heard of CNS News before? Wonder why? Because it isn't news, it's partisan politicing masquerading as 'news' meant to be picked0-up and spread by bloggers with an agenda.

Waste of feckin' bandwidth

The News of WMD's being found is proof Iraq under Saddam did indeed have WMD's which made him a threat. Liberals and the MSM are silent on this because when the Iraq War is judged they will go down in history as being on the wrong side that claimed Iraq under Saddam never had WMD's and was never a threat..

You may be right. We have yet to see this picked up by "official" news.
I doubt this would look good for Sen. Santorum if this was all BS though.

Of course they had them, the point was that they weren't any good by the point we invaded, and we knew that, because... WE SOLD THEM.

As in, no longer good anymore, no longer functional, not a concern.

In order for something to be a weapon of mass destruction it must first be able to cause destruction. Expired weapons can't do that.
