Wonderful stuff. Now let's see if the muslims are really going to prove that islam is The Religion of Peace (tm) by showing how tolerant they are of multiculturalism and diversity.

Or will the usual apologists rush to their defense and excuse them for being intolerant, bigoted, narrow-minded, violent, and ignorant?

Can I try? I don't defend islam as a religion of peace mearly that there are peaceful practioners of it and the entire religion shouldn't be summarily executed because of the actions of a few.

Even I must admit that it gets difficult at times but I recognize that most of the violence come from people who grew up in a culture of violence and a culture of apparent subservience to western (Xtian) influences.

It is wrong for them to expect everyone to treat their religion and religous icons as they do especially when it seems most often they don't reciprocate. They are likely thinking "we have never disrespected the Danish flag or the Danish people before so why are they doing this?"

They think of their religion in much the same way as we think of our natons. Look at the reactions we have when another country boos our nation anthem or disrespects our flag. No we aren't threatening kidnappings and killings but the sentiment is the same. I imagine if the US had a videotape of ex-PMPM blowing his nose on the US flag the backlash would have been enormous including some very dire official reprisals.

To them their religion is everything. They don't think like us. Thats the problem and always has been we we simply expect them to become "westernized" because we demand it.

Just wanted to tell you that we already have a thread on this subject – not to say it’s not a good idée to have two threads – but fore those who want some more background it is already in the other thread:

I agree whole heartedly Derby, and no question the gravity of the cartoon is on par with what you describe. Except the scale is way off. There is a tremendous difference between a public newspapers lack f respect ofr a religion in the name of satire, verses a leader of a country blowing his nose on a nations flag. The two are not the same. And even given that the reprisals would not involve the threats against people having nothing to do with the incident and targeted soley based on their nationality or colour of skin.

We are not asking the Muslim extremists to become westernized, we are demanding that they become civilized. Anachranstic religous ideologies have no place in the world politics of today. Any person claiming that right are simply tolerant of the intolerant. I for one will have no part of it.

Regards,

Fuzzy

Well here we go…

The Cartoons were published as part of an internal Danish debate on self censorship – A Danish children’s book about the life of Mohammed was do to be published but no illustrators dared publicly to take credit for any illustrations at the same time the woman from the Dutch movie “submission” by Theo Van Gogh (he was killed in Amsterdam some time ago do to that picture) was releasing a new book (political) and could not find any that would publicly translate it – as a response to this (and one other case I can’t remember) Jyllands-Posten (the Danish Paper) set out to test this self censorship by letting 12 drawers depict Mohammed in September last year. Due to this we had a public debate in Denmark, that clearly showed that the public was fore the freedom of expression and that it was within the boundaries of the law to illustrate religious icons. Some Imams in the Danish society did not agree and as a result of no public backing in Denmark they set out to get support in the Arab world – at first it did not seem that they had mush luck with this – but in the middle of December Arab diplomats started demanding anti freedom of expression laws and the prosecution of the Jyllands-Posten a thing the Danish government clearly rejected. Mid January the Saudi government inspired it’s population to boycott all Danish gods – “hitting them on their money will make them change their minds”! from there it has been spreading all over the middle east greatly helped by Danish fanatic Muslims appearing on Arab satellite TV telling of Mohammed drawings that did not originate from the Jyllands-Posten and of Danish people burning the Koran (of cause not true)

Well there you have it – We have made it very clear how we want our society in Denmark – democracy is above religious dogma and freedom of religion and expression is a part of democracy!

YES, WE ARE!!!!

If they want to live in the West then goddamit they need to be Westernized!!!

WE should not have to be more like them to make them happy in OUR countries. THEY should try to fit in or go the fuck back to whatever shithole they left behind.

Those sunzabitches expect you to act 100% muslim when you're in their country and then they want us to do the same in our own countries????

Fuck that.

Avro Avro:
More hate spewing from Bort.....?

What a shock.

More cultural and national suicidal impulses spewing from Avro?

No surprise there.

So, Avro, when the muslims demand that your wife wear a burqha so she doesn't offend their sensibilities are you going to cave in and do that, too?

Is there any point at which you'll stand up and say NO! to their demands?

Hmm?

Islam is as much a religion of peace as Christianity or Catholics are...

If the Danish newspaper hadgone ahead and priinted the illustrations for teh children's book that would've been a reasonable respectful approach to questioning this particular Islamic religious doctrine. Instead they chose to print a series of insulting unnecessarily provocative cartoons that they knew would enrage Muslims. All this has done is benefit the xtremists on both sides. The Islamophobes point at the Muslim reaction and claim that this just proves what an intolerant, violent religion Islam is. The fundamentalist Muslims can say this just proves that the West encorages insulting Islam. Both can then claim that Islam is incompatible with Western civilization. Well done Jyllands-Posten and all the other papers who reprinted these cartoons in the name of freedom of speech, you've played right into their hands.
