eureka eureka:
It is time the US and other American countries spoke out and supported Britain in this. If the US wants to keep friends in Europe it should be aware that friendship is a two way matter.

Obama has made it crystal clear that he is no friend to the UK.

Well, according to Santorum, Obama = Hitler, so he's probably still got relatives living in Argy.

Most of their troops are marginally literate mestizos from the back country

have you looked at the eyhnic make up of Argentina? Almost 87% of the population is of European ancestry, with Italians being the second largest ethnic group, after the Spanish...most of whom are Castilian. Mestizos only form 8% of the population, and much like Canada's 'native' population, there is just as much or more European DNA than native. Only about 1.6% of the population claims to be full blooded Amerinds.

$1:
The majority of these European immigrants came from Italy, Spain, Germany, Wales, Poland, Croatia, Russia, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Belgium, Norway and several other regions. Italian population in Argentina arrived mainly from the northern Italian regions varying between Piedmont, Veneto and Lombardy, later from Campania and Calabria;[10] Many Argentines have the gentilic of an Italian city, place, street or occupation of the immigrant as last name, many of them were not necessarily born Italians, but once they did the roles of immigration in Italy the name usually changed. Spanish immigrants were mainly Galicians and Basques.

Argentinian Demographics

Thank you for the social studies lesson. Meanwhile, most of the Argentine army's infantry troops are mestizos from the back country. The officer corps are more urban and European, true.

Looks like that will be irrelevant since it looks like it'll be Romney helping Obama to get reelected in the fall.

At moments like this you really should have your rep points turned on because that was worth a +5.

At this point I'm putting down the "Obama hates Britain" nonsense into the same bucket of filthy lumps along with "Obama hates Israel", "Obama is a socialist", and "Obama's an America-hating Muslim because his beatnik/hippy absentee daddy, with whom he spent all of 5 minutes with during his entire life, was once a Muslim for another 5 minutes". Yes, returning a bust of Winston Churchill that was on loan to the White House during the Bush years is 100% equivalent to Obama supporting the Argies and, if he had a time machine and could go back to 1940, he'd overturn LendLease and send all those obsolete American destroyers to Hitler instead of to Britain. It's pointless to fight this sort of insanity and if others are so bloody determined to be crazy and just plain stupid about things like this there's nothing that I can do or say to stop them. So fuck it, I'm not going to even bother trying anymore.

Yeah, but Harper = Goebbels, so you'd give me -5 for that and we'd be even.

Please don't stop your little rants. They're very funny and I think I speak for most people on the forum to say that we would miss them. Hell they even have some truth to them. (Unless you're defending Harper of course).

Thanos @ Thu Mar 01, 2012 11:39 am

Actually I've only neg repped about four or five times that I can remember. To me there's something not quite cricket about it so I don't engage in that practice if I can help it. I prefer the awesomeness of my insults to be in the open for everyone to enjoy, pothead, rather than the sneaky neg rep way of punishment. So if you said Harper=Goebbels I'd merely fall back on the truth and say that you're dumber than a post, and probably high on drugs again too, and leave it at that.

andyt @ Thu Mar 01, 2012 11:44 am

See, that's the problem. Until you've white lighted, you can't possibly know the truth. Goebbels and Harper - exactly the same aura, man. You could look it up in the Akashic records.

Retuning the Winston Churchill bust is not the only slap in the face to the U.K. by the Obama administration. Last March Hillary Clinton stated in a press conference in Argentina that Britain should negotiate with Argentina over the Falkland islands. What is there to negotiate? The matter was solved in 1982. The Brits paid in blood to settle the matter. There are numerous British ex militay members who are crippled and disfigured due to that conflict. For the U.S. Secretary of State to hold a press conference with the President of Argentina, and state that Britain should negotiate the future of the Falklands is a major stab in the back to one of our greatest allies. There is no other way to state it, and no amount of spin is going to change that fact.

Imagine that Russia is claiming a huge chunk of Artic land that currently belongs to Canada. Imagine a high ranking member of the U.S. government holds a news conference in Russia and states that Canada should negotiate with Russia over the land. How would that go over in Canada? Not too well I would guess.

Bravo.

And don't forget that Obama had no qualms about giving away Britain's nuclear secrets to Russia.

Obama hates Britain and anyone who says otherwise is best described this way:

rick, the Yanks have to play to a Latin American audience too. I think most of us with experience in this area realise that. One thing is said in public, another behind closed doors.

It was the same in 1982. The Yanks seemed (that's the operative word) to side with the OAS and the Argies when in reality they were supplying the Brits with satellite intel, upgraded AAM's for the Harriers and all kinds of other sneaky-beaky help.

Until, the shooting starts, it's all part of the big game. Hilary and Obama are just playing their parts.

Obama and Hillary crossed a line telling the Argies that the British claim on the Falklands was a topic of negotiation. In combination with all of the other thoughtless things Obama has done to our closest ally (still?) this was just another in a long list of insults.

And, yes, last time around the USA was rather friendly in assisting the UK. There's plenty of anecdotal stories around of US forces 'misplacing' white pointy things where the RAF folks could get them and there's stories of USN replenishment ships being right neighborly to RN ships that needed fuel and stores.

James Bamford wrote in one of his books how the US employed a satellite to bounce an IR laser at the Falklands causing the cloud cover to illuminate...coincidentally...at the same time the RAF came in using night vision gear to hit the Argies.

Would Obama do any of this? I sincerely doubt it.

Frankly, I am relatively sure he'll prohibit any 'wink, wink, nod, nod' stuff from going on ahead of time.

I would prefer that the U.S. not suck up to Latin America. Winning hearts and minds by kissing ass and throwing money around the third world has not worked too well for us. I say less carrot and more stick. Clintons comments have only emboldened Argentina. It was only after her statement that Argentina grew the balls to convince the rest of the Americas to deny Falkland flagged ships docking rights. Argentina's coast gaurd routinely harasses fishing vessels in the area. This botcott is just the latest incident. None of this would have happened if Clinton would have said that Britain is a member of NATO. An attack on one NATO member would be considered an attack on all members. Any country guilty of such a transgression can count on a healthy dose of "shock and awe" courtesy of Uncle Sam. If Clinton had said something along those lines, we would not be having this conversation today.

The NATO treaty specifically excludes attacks on territories below the equator.

The Falklands, St. Helena, and a number of other British and French islands are essentially up for grabs so far as the NATO treaty goes.
