I would prefer that the U.S. not suck up to Latin America. Winning hearts and minds by kissing ass and throwing money around the third world has not worked too well for us. I say less carrot and more stick. Clintons comments have only emboldened Argentina. It was only after her statement that Argentina grew the balls to convince the rest of the Americas to deny Falkland flagged ships docking rights. Argentina's coast gaurd routinely harasses fishing vessels in the area. This botcott is just the latest incident. None of this would have happened if Clinton would have said that Britain is a member of NATO. An attack on one NATO member would be considered an attack on all members. Any country guilty of such a transgression can count on a healthy dose of "shock and awe" courtesy of Uncle Sam. If Clinton had said something along those lines, we would not be having this conversation today.
The NATO treaty specifically excludes attacks on territories below the equator.
The Falklands, St. Helena, and a number of other British and French islands are essentially up for grabs so far as the NATO treaty goes.
So thats why it was not invoked in 1982. Learn something new every day. Still I do not recall any treaty obligation requiring Britain to assist us in the first gulf war or Iraq [was there?]. A little tit for tat would not be uncalled for. I think that a strongly worded atatement impling American military involement by Clinton would have put an end to this ongoing fiasco.

Here's a nice story. A Falkland Island has been named after the last member of the British Armed Forces to have died in the Falklands War.
Craig Island has been named after Craig Jones, who was killed by a shell on June 13, 1982 — just 24 hours before the fighting ended.
Craig was killed during the Battle of Mount Longdon, which resulted in a British victory and the occupation of a key position around the besieged Argentine garrison. The battle resulted in 23 British and 31 Argentine fatalities.

THE parents of the last British soldier to die in the Falklands War now own one of the islands — and have named it after him as a permanent memorial.
Para Craig Jones, 20, was killed by a shell on June 13, 1982 — 24 hours before the fighting ended.
Parents Richard and Pamela only found out when they returned from a night out to celebrate the ceasefire. They hit on the idea of buying a piece of land to dedicate to Craig.
But after hearing their touching story, farmer Carol Phillips gave them six-acre Little Rabbit Island, which can be seen from the spot on Mount Longdon where Craig fell.

Richard and Pamela renamed it Craig Island, after their son.
It now has a memorial plaque, flown out by Richard, other son Gareth, 47, and Gareth's son Alexander, 18.
It reads: "Dedicated to the memory of Craig Jones, 3rd Bn Parachute Regiment. The spirit of our race that never dies."
Pamela, 71, of Tenbury Wells, Worcs, said: "Even if the Argentinians claim it, we are determined the island will stay in our family forever. It will stay a wildlife haven."
Richard, 75, added: "It's something to commemorate Craig when we're gone."

rick, the Yanks have to play to a Latin American audience too. I think most of us with experience in this area realise that. One thing is said in public, another behind closed doors.
It was the same in 1982. The Yanks seemed (that's the operative word) to side with the OAS and the Argies when in reality they were supplying the Brits with satellite intel, upgraded AAM's for the Harriers and all kinds of other sneaky-beaky help.
Until, the shooting starts, it's all part of the big game. Hilary and Obama are just playing their parts.
Obama and Hillary crossed a line telling the Argies that the British claim on the Falklands was a topic of negotiation. In combination with all of the other thoughtless things Obama has done to our closest ally (still?) this was just another in a long list of insults.
And, yes, last time around the USA was rather friendly in assisting the UK. There's plenty of anecdotal stories around of US forces 'misplacing' white pointy things where the RAF folks could get them and there's stories of USN replenishment ships being right neighborly to RN ships that needed fuel and stores.
James Bamford wrote in one of his books how the US employed a satellite to bounce an IR laser at the Falklands causing the cloud cover to illuminate...coincidentally...at the same time the RAF came in using night vision gear to hit the Argies.
Would Obama do any of this? I sincerely doubt it.
Frankly, I am relatively sure he'll prohibit any 'wink, wink, nod, nod' stuff from going on ahead of time.
I wouldn't be surprised if Obama didn't covertly help the Argies. His is more interested in shoving his nose up latin American ass than standing by the UK.
He is probably still grinding an axe against the UK over his granddaddy's enhanced interrogation and dis-encouragement by the UK in the Kenyan Mau Mau situation.

Wow. Starting a new tinfoil hat movement now that the Birthers have died down?
Fuck sakes... unbelievable. You guys are worse than the baying whining anti-Harperites. Honestly, don't you guys some anti-Obama forum in the US you can vent your spleen on?
Better yet, we should pack up the Argies and send them to North Korea and Afghanistan - you're other fall back position.

Like Obama covertly helping Danes to take Han Island?
You can frame it for me.
Gunnair, Obama gave top secret UK nuclear missile information to the Russians without even asking. It is not unfathomable that he'd betray any other sort of trust.

Inexcusable. Doesn't mean that some won't try to make excuses. some seem to think he can do no wrong

Bart, that is your country's problem to deal with. I honestly couldn't give a shit.
