This is the question that I have myself as well have heard it asked many times by many others 'out west'. Why are clubs used and not rifles?Farmers don't kill cows with baseball bats!
Now before anyone decides that I am for or against; let me say that I never had the opportunity to try seal meat as I don't recall seeing it on the shelves of Safeway!
I do however eat beef,chicken,pork,seafood etc and did hunt for many years and as a kid was raised on a lot of wild game. I have leather coats,furniture,shoes,walletand one of my hobbies is working with leather. Again, I think it is the method used that has most people upset!
This is my 2 cents and am not going to try to defend and hope that I have not offended anyone.

They do use rifles. 90% of the seals killed are kileed with rifles. The other 20% I have no idea what method is use, but it may well be the club. I agree though, it should be the rifle or something quick if they're going to do it.

I think the seals get clubbed because you can just walk right up to them, and I'm sure that when hit in the right place they'll die right away. If you grab a rabbit by it's back legs and do a chop with your hands to the back of it's neck, it dies. I don't think it's right for any animal to suffer, but come on now, those videos are going to show you the worst cases out there. I'm pretty sure that if they showed a video of a woman in extreme pain and then dieing while giving birth, to high school student there probably wouldn't be so many kids with babies. There is always going to be a dark, negative part to life. People complain about this week or 2 weeks that seals get hunted, so many animals killed in such a sort time, well, why not have the season open year round?Then it wouldn't seen so extreme.
