This topic is very dear and close to my heart. This is a matter dealing with a cruel and inhumane act against life and nature. Its sad to think that we as human beings are capable of functioning in such a state of unconciousness and incompassion. This link explains what I'm talking about better than I could ever explain it in this forum.

I hope that this compells you to sign the petition supporting the abolishment of this inhumane act.

God bless...

 Do yourself a favour and do some research and educate yourself about the seal hunt rather than listening to and believing everything the media tells you.

I just watched the video.... Way to pull on my heart strings.

I'm torn on this one. They're not endangered... but they're still babies... and relatively defenceless.

However... all is not always as it seems.

Incredible. Poor puppies!

$1:
PETA kills animals. By the thousands.

From July 1998 through the end of 2004, PETA killed over 12,400 dogs, cats, and other "companion animals" -- at its Norfolk, Virginia headquarters. That's more than five defenseless animals every day. Not counting the dogs and cats PETA spayed and neutered, the group put to death over 85 percent of the animals it took in during 2003 alone. And its angel-of-death pattern shows no sign of changing.

In 2005, 90.7% of animals were killed, while only 6.8% were adopted.

The hunt has not taken pups since 1987. Only adults are taken now.

I think your money, time and other resources would be better spent helping people.....

BluesBud @ Sun Mar 12, 2006 9:30 am

I have had first hand experience with PETA protesters.

I am unsure about this forums thread is the topic "The Seal Hunt" or "Pro & Con About Organisations Like PETA, Greenpeace, et al"? Rather than going off topic I will not go into detail unless the forum is made more clear.

The seal hunt is a brutal and bloody slaughter....It's disgusting and makes my stomach turn....

But the same things can be said about slaughterhouses that kill chickens and cows, and since I eat chicken and beef I can't condemn people who kill seals.

Chevyanne @ Sun Mar 12, 2006 9:49 am

That video showed only adult seals, the young are the white fluffy ones. And all meat bleeds when you kill it! Grow up. You should see the mess you can make with a cute, old moose. When the hunters come after you with a club then you can start to complain.

VitaminC @ Sun Mar 12, 2006 9:53 am

Actually, the seals lose their white coats after like a week or something.....

I don't know how you define when a seal becomes an adult, but from the info I've seen the seal hunt happens when the seals are about a month old...

I actually don't see what their age has to do with it.....Veal is baby cows.....

Two years ago the security company I work for was hired by the City of Ottawa to add aditional security to a building that housed both a comunity center & a theater. The ballet The Nutcracker was playing at the theater and the city got wind that PETA was going to set up a protest outside and posiably cause a problem for anybody showing up with fur coats. The city knowing that this was a family event hired extra security.

The show was on for three nights. The first night there was a group of seven protesters five were 13 to 17. The two others were adults and obviously the organisers for the group as they were very aware of the presence of security and did their best to minipulate the situation to their benifit.

We explained the barriers imposed by the city & the theater. They observed an understanding untill a local news reporter and camera man arrived. Obviously tipped off by PETA tring to create an incedent.

Suddenly a laptop computer was exibited showing the inhumane skinning of animals for the preperation of pelts. We were assured that only the adults wearing fur coats would be asked if they would want to see the film. Again this was the situation untill the camera was rolling. At that point the laptop was thrust into the path of any adult that walked up. There was no regard for any children that happend to be with the parent. A comic book intitled " Your Mother Kills Animals" was offered to the kids. The cover showed a woman with a kitchen knife stabbing a live rabbit with blood everywhere.

This went on for an hour. Shortly after the reporter left the teenagers were released. The two adults continued for an hour more, somewhat respecting the previous restrictions then closed up shop for the night.

The next two nights nobody showed up to continue the protest. I guess they got their media attention and that was all they realy wanted.

They said they were there to inform the public about their issues. Then if that is so, where were they the next two nights? Why the problems for one hour with the cameras around then nothing? Was it just to scare people out of bringing the children to a family event? Just to get on the news? I know that no lives were lost but this is a form of terrorism. All be it in its mildest form.

At the risk of getting my head ripped off, I'll give my opinion on the whole seal/any animal hunt.

Cute or not, I don't usually have a big problem with hunting or killing an animal when its meant to be eaten. Humans are animals and it's part of nature that we do kill sometimes for our food. It's not really different than a lion killing a antelop for breakfast - we have to eat and meat is usually part of our diet (although I admit, I eat much less meat nowadays because I don't trust what the commercial 'farmers' are doing to the chicken/pig/cows, etc to get them so fat so fast.. But that's a whole other discussion  )

What I do have a big problem with is when we kill for our vanity. I understand that 300 years ago, synthetic fibres didn't exist and that fur (and wool) was the only thing that could keep us warm. Today, we don't NEED to kill a fox to keep warm, there are alternatives that don't involve killing.. Same thing for cosmetics and other 'enhancements' we use that has nothing to do with 'survival'. I wonder sometimes who the hell we think we are to decide that a fox/seal/any animal exist for our vanity. Imagine a wolf deciding to wear a moose jacket...

So to go back to the seal hunt - I do have a problem with it, not because the pups are cute (I think cows are cute too!) but because most of the seals killed serve a purpose that I find disgusting (if it was for food only, that would be a different story)..

Hope I make sense 8O
