I already got a spike with the Bow here in Westchester county NY which opened on the 15th of October. Now I swithced land and I am hunting a monster which I have been for 3 years now. (there is only bow in Westchester no gun, it is open till the 31st of Dec.) Went by the buthcher twice and he said it was slow. A a matter of fact when I went there he was just hanging around waiting. Been very warm this year.

Gun opens on the 19th of Nov this year in NY state. I am looking forward to that it is more of a social thing. Matter of fact two of my cousins are coming from Toronto like they do every year.I go about two hours north of NYC it gets better and better every year.

Congrats and goodluck to all!

Figfarmer:

Just out of curiosity, was he face on to you or standing broadside? I feel pretty confident that a face on neck shot would be very effective, but I wasn't sure about the side-on shot.

Geeze, normally I'd be begging for meat from those of you who are overstocked, but I had a bunch donated to me already. There seems to be plentitude of deer out there this year. I haven't heard of anybody not getting anything.

My next door neighbor got one with her 2003 Ford F250 last week, does that count?
:D

Banged the hell of the grill, but the rest of the truck took it pretty good.

The pisser is that in California it's legal to keep the roadkill and she about puked when I asked if she had!

Thanks guys  As you can see in the pic, I'm a little bit jazzed  He weighed nearly 300 lbs on the hoof, 250 field dressed, and just under 200 on the hooks. I'm thinking we'll end up with nearly 100 lbs of meat!!! Venison burgers anyone??? BBQ at my place next weekend!!!!!

Funny you should mention that. I hit mine in the neck this year and severed the wind pipe. Usually I shoot high on the rib cage and break the back, but this one was as high above me as it was far away from me and if I had trid for that I would have blown it's stomach out. It jumped once and bled out beautifully. I got Ken's with my normal shot and unfortunately it was a lead round and made kind of a big exit wound. Oh well, we were both mostly grinding this year anyhow. I think of 110 pouns I ground ninety, did ten in roasts and ten in steaks.

The last one I took I pretty much did the entire buck into steaks and cutlets. I also did a few pounds of stew meat to make meat and shepherd's pies. Hey, that would be good for supper tonight.....Shepherd's Pie......Yummy

Anyone else here have pepperoni made from their kills? I had some made from the moose in '02 and jumpers in '03 and '04. Damn is it good.

you don't see racks like that much anymore around here. Big deer; yes, but tiny antlers. Mine was a six this year and I got about the same amount of meat, but it was what we call a "basket rack".

My uncle hunts & once gave me a large amt of moose for stew...It was soooo yummy...

The only game i'd love to try here in oz is kangaroo or croc...As i have given up trying to get bison from a NSW company & due to quarantine can't have any sent of course...

Hey if you can shoot deer why not venture down to NZ & kill some F**** possums..bloody annoying things...

I hear you Fig. I grew up in Kingston / Madoc / Kaladar and cut my teeth on them big bodied basket bucks. I was the young guy in my grandfather's gang and got to haul all the deer out of the bush for the old guys. I was not a fan of deer hunting back then

Should start a thread for funny hunting stories!!!!

I'm going to butcher mine tonight. Hung for 5 days, and it's been pretty mild here so I can't wait much longer. Anyone else do their own butchering or does everyone opt out and let the pro's handle it?
