Istanbul or Constantinople?

Its called Istanbul. Christians weren't willing to fight for it, they lost it fair and square. Nuff said.
Oh, I'd say they were very willing to fight for it for well over a thousand years. The West just got caught up in their own internal battles when the Ottomans rose to power. (The Schism didn't help much either)
Thats why they relied on the Venetians, who conquered it 300 years before to defend it? The population at the time was around 100,000 I think. Not exactly the pinnicle of Christianity anymore I would say.
The Fourth Crusade was messed up. Anyway, up to the last day the Christian inhabitants gave it their all- even if they were lead by a Genoan.
Oh no Im not denying they didnt give it their all in fact I am amazed they survived long enough to an enemy 5 times their number. If fact, I think there was a problem with the chain of command or something, and Mehemed took advantage of that and made one last siege and there you go. What I am wondering is why the Christians didnt bolster the population more. England and France had the 100 years war right? What the hell were Germany and the rest of Europe doing?
The Hussites, Swiss, and Poles were all busy invading Germany, Bohemia, Austria and the Teutonic Kingdoms. Europe was all tied up- the Black Death didn't help either.
Forgot about the plague.

Isn't Istanbul just Turkisk for "the City"? I have some Turkish friends who say most Turks still refer to it as Costantinople. Besides which Mumbai - Bombay, Malvinas - Falklands, it's all a matter of semantics.

Constantinople is what the city used to be called. It's now definetely Istanbul.
For English-speakers, they are only called the Falkland Islands. "Malvinas" is the Spanish term for the islands. That's what the Argies, who wrongly claim that Argentina should belong to them, call the Falklands.

During the Hundred Year' War (which, funnily enough, only lasted 70-80 years) Germany didn't exist.
Germany only came into existence in the 1860's. So did Italy. So they are both younger countries than even the US and Canada.

But I think what he is referring to are the regions set out by the Treaty of Verdun in 843. There was a Germania prior to the 1860's, too.

Correct. I was assuming people knew I meant the Holy Roman Empire but I also meant the Germanic lands etc. I didn't mean as a nationality.

Well, previous to my other saying, it should be called Byzantium, the original name it was given. The name Constantinople was given by a reformed Roman Emperor who gave up his life in the name of a God who gave him a vision of victory and imposed upon him the Edict of Milan. As soon as Constanine I became Emperor, the Roman Empire dwindled into a puny Christian state and faded. Sad.

Well, you cannot deny its strengths as a Christian city it did last over a thousand years after the Roman Empire, but given time, all things must come to an end, it was the citys end. The Muslims wanted it more than the Christians, they got it, Christians lost it. The walls of Constantinople will forever stand as a bastion of Christian might against the onslaught of the Muslim horde.
