I like Constantinople, but, to quote "Shadowy Men From a Shadowy Planet:"
"It's Istanbul not Constantinople, it's Instanbul not Constantinople, it's Instanbul not Constnatinople."

That's all I know. Good song.

Its called Istanbul. Christians weren't willing to fight for it, they lost it fair and square. Nuff said.

Oh, I'd say they were very willing to fight for it for well over a thousand years. The West just got caught up in their own internal battles when the Ottomans rose to power. (The Schism didn't help much either)

Thats why they relied on the Venetians, who conquered it 300 years before to defend it? The population at the time was around 100,000 I think. Not exactly the pinnicle of Christianity anymore I would say. At its height it was over 1 million. I wonder what happened?

The Fourth Crusade was messed up. Anyway, up to the last day the Christian inhabitants gave it their all- even if they were lead by a Genoan.

Oh no Im not denying they didnt give it their all in fact I am amazed they survived long enough to an enemy 5 times their number. If fact, I think there was a problem with the chain of command or something, and Mehemed took advantage of that and made one last siege and there you go. What I am wondering is why the Christians didnt bolster the population more. England and France had the 100 years war right? What the hell were Germany and the rest of Europe doing?

Istanbul for ever!!

Tman1 @ Thu Jun 16, 2005 4:08 pm

The city was originally called Byzantium by the Greeks was it not?

The Hoser @ Thu Jun 16, 2005 4:10 pm

I think it was called Byzantium before the Greeks, I think it was Thrace or Macedonia that named it.

Byzantium was the original name of the modern city of Istanbul. Byzantium was originally settled by Greek colonists from Megara in 667 BC and named after their king Byzas. The name "Byzantium" is a Latinization of the original Thracian-Greek name Byzantion

The Muslims laid siege to the city and launched the world's first biological war when they hurtled the bodies of plague victims into the city to infect the residents with plague when the bloated bodies burst on impact. Nice.

The Hussites, Swiss, and Poles were all busy invading Germany, Bohemia, Austria and the Teutonic Kingdoms. Europe was all tied up- the Black Death didn't help either.
