The White Poppy
putz putz:

White Poppies say to the dead, (symbolically), that their death was not to be respected, but that the deaths were wrong. Yet they gave their lives, the heroes among them anyway, for what they thought was right.
You don't have to agree with that. But you don't go up to someone's funeral, and say to his family, "You know, he was wrong to offer his life for that." You can think it all you want, sit at home and think that heart and soul all you want.
But you don't go to someone's funeral and make it all about you.
And the fact that people here are so self-absorbed that they can't see that is just a pity.
If you can't honor war dead on their own terms, then just stay home.
Bravo!
I was just wondering did anyone here thats trumpeting the white poppy actually have the balls to go to a Rememberance day parade or ceremony today, with said white poppy on?
Oooh! An implied threat of violence!
A year from now I'll test out your hypothesis: I'll wear a white poppy to some ceremony and behave respectfully.
You know as well as I that nothing will happen.
QBC QBC:
I think the white poppy is completely and totally disrespectful. A slap in the face of those who chose to serve this nation and their families. Regardless if you agree with the politics that sent these people to a foreign land and ultimately resulted in their deaths, shut up about it when the people are either being buried or being remembered today. The idea of the white poppy on remembrance day is disgusting.
So anyone who would prefer to wear a white poppy should just shut up, conform and adhere robot-like to the norms as dictated by the Legion, eh?
You disappoint me, QBC. Usually you're more sensible.

You started this thread before Remembrance Day, why are you waiting a year to try out your theory? This day is already set aside to make a specific statement, using a specific symbol. If you want a White Poppy Day go sit in the Pumpkin Patch and await the Great Pumpkin.

Because it's past midnight here and I wouldn't have bothered until it was suggested that I would get attacked for wearing one as a spectator at a ceremony. If you want I can make one up and wear it around for the next few days, but it won't tell us whether or not I'll get clobbered on Remembrance Day, will it?

Why is it so important to the Legion that
everyone observe the occasion in exactly the same way?
Wasn't this kind of rigid conformism what they were fighting against (at least in WWII) in the first place?

If you have to ask a stupid question as that you don't deserve to wear a red poppy.

Get off your high horse. Where is the implied threat of violence? As Hwacker stated why wait till next year you started this thread before today. Seems from your post you didn't even go to a ceremony this year. Why would that change next year?

Wearing the red poppy isn't conforming, it's a way of bringing those that remember, respect and give thanks for what's been given to keep our country free for at least a day (although most, including I wear it more than just that one day) a year.
And I know it's been said a number of times in this thread already, but by wearing a white poppy you're doing nothing more than spitting on the graves of those that have given their lives to protect your rights and freedoms.
If you wear a white poppy over the next few days or next year I hope you run into a war vet,, explain to him that you think he shouldn't have gone oversees, and he promptly gives you a nice punt to yer dangly bits. If you don't want to "conform" (although I've already stated that I don't believe it's conforming) then don't wear a poppy, it's better to look like a ignorant fool than a complete asshole.

As behooving as it might be to wear a poppy on Remembrance Day it seems to me it would be even more representative of our collective actions if we were all to put pressure on our Federal government to "own up" to their responsibility to settle with those war vets who lived and are being screwed over with regard to pensions and etc. I personally find it reprehensible the way Government is not doing it 's duty to War Vets who served bravely and are being misused by our present day governments. It's pitiful and a disgrace to our collective remembrance to those who served not to mention the boys who are serving now and will have to deal with government inaction down the road. Arrrgggghhhh

You guys are in denial.
No, sir, I am afraid that
you are in denial.
Your grandfathers may have had a tough time doing what they did, but were their lives
lessened by what they did? Were they the honourable men that I assume they were I am sure they'd slap you for that comment.
Because of what they did they were able to come back to a country that had not been affected by the ravages of war and they were able to raise your parents in safety and peace who were then able to raise your ungratefull ass in a safety and peace that you neither appreciate nor understand.
When your grandfathers went off to war they were fighting to secure the peace and tranquility of their homeland. The only option that they had to ensure the peace of your nation was to head for Berlin. The decision to go to war was not theirs. And, frankly, had Britain and France chosen peace instead of going to war when Germany attacked Poland then it would only have been a matter of time before Germany overran them, too. And don't think that the Atlantic Ocean protected you from Germany as it didn't. Their U-Boats patrolled your coast and sank your ships, too.
Whie poppies and white flags have an awful lot in common and suggesting that a symbol of surrender and collaboration should have equal time with a symbol of sacrifice and dedication is purile and disgusting. You insult the memories of your grandfathers and you
lessen their sacrifices and you
lessen their memory by implying that they would have been better men had they been pacifistic cowards instead of the brave and capable men that they must have been to make it through that war.
Peace is not free and I will never, ever, understand the damnable and despicable fools who think that peace can be made by yelling slogans and marching around pointlessly.
What is utterly sad is that your grandfathers suffered and sacrificed and it is
you who thinks less of them because they did so.

I haven't insulted my grandfathers. They both served but neither became uptight, thin-skinned, intolerant Legion yahoos afterwards.
