The thing is ... i am a Québécois in first place. And, im not alone ..

Which England provinces are u from?
Look at the colors of Canada's new electoral map, if there are separate provinces in Canada at the moment, they are Alberta and to a lesser degree, PEI. One province is totally blue and the other all red.
At least we can say that Québec separatists are upfront about their own choice.

Marcarc @ Sun Jan 29, 2006 7:40 am

There is no way of knowing that. Just because the bloc got 51% of the seats and 47% of the vote doesn't mean anything about separatism. You could be a die hard separatist in a riding that elected a conservative or liberal and your vote still meant bubkus.

In Alberta only 65% of the population is tory, so that province should only be just over half blue (perhaps less since we know that if you don't vote tory you've got a wasted vote).

My point is just this, don't blame Canadians for the representation in Ottawa-we didn't vote for it, and we had no role in its design (and much the same can be said in Quebec). As for the comment that started the thread that's just too inane to deserve comment.

Clovis @ Sun Jan 29, 2006 10:30 pm

The truth is .. Québec have a flag before Canada have one.

Québec and french people of Canada make Canada become a country cause we show that this land was our land and not London land. Now, we have to do a major reform or this country will collapse. And yes, if i have to make it collapse with a referendum in Québec to start this reform ... I will do it! I'll vote yes. One thing is sure, Alberta and the west start their own movement. So , what do we do, stay with this old London monarchy system, or all work togheter and make a real country?

Bryan of StA @ Sun Jan 29, 2006 11:15 pm
In Alberta only 65% of the population is tory
65% of the voting population. Remember that a substantial portion of the population feels detatched enough not to vote, and many population groups cannot vote (immigrants and sub-18 year olds).

Same thing applies in Quebec, as it does to the nation as a whole.

There is also a lot of historical animosity towards the Federal Government by the French speakers. Remember the ejection of the Cajuns from Acadia and the Riel Rebellion, besides the colonial wars between the French and British Empires. We can't sniff at other countries for having such long-standing conflicts when ours are still around too.

I'm from the west and to say there is a separatist movement is so ridiculous!!!
But for Clovis and Michou check out this ">here
hope this poll helps kill your dream about breaking apart this beautiful country!

Marcarc @ Tue Jan 31, 2006 6:32 pm

Beautiful country? Where? We all know about polls. If you want to see polls go the other way just wait til the next conservative majority (or before) when Harper starts beefing up the military and sending it along with the americans. Quebec has always shown it's 'distinct' character when it comes to warfare. If Canada starts getting more aggressive with al queda or whomever, and things start happening in Canada, then you'll see Quebecers suddenly thinking twice about being associated with Canada.

Anyway, polls are irrelevant, all that matters is whether a PQ government gets back into power. They are the ones who can call a referendum, and anything can happen in the leadup to voting day.

Dino @ Tue Jan 31, 2006 7:08 pm

Stephen Harper isn't going to be more agressive with foreign policy because he's going to want to get re elected again. And yes this poll means alot because it shows that the rise in separatism had to do with the Liberals. Although I can't stand conservatism it's nice to see Quebecers open to federalism again the poll does indicate that support for separation is exactly were it was in 1995. It was at 33%, today it's at 34%.

samuel @ Tue Jan 31, 2006 7:14 pm

I read a piece recently, can't remember if it was the in Globe & Mail or what, anyways there was a dino type federalist patting himself on the back about the BLOC losing 3 seats and how in his view Québec nationalism was beaten. Think about it, a separatist Party with 51 seats that holds the balance of power over the FEDERAL governement is a sign Québec nationalism is weak?

Some people are desperate in Federal lalaland, here's to hoping it stays that way until the next referendum.

Marcarc @ Sat Feb 18, 2006 12:32 pm

Outside Quebec people simply don't understand the system, so it's easy to see why ANY drop in Bloc votes is 'a sign'. Far more realistic at least is the last provincial election, if people vote in a party that won't have a referenda, clearly it is not foremost on their minds. Referenda is held at the provincial level, NOT at the federal level.

United we stand, divided we fall. It's a simple concept. If Quebec separates, the East Coast will be cut off and pressured to separate as well. Alberta will leave too. When they were poor, they had a lot of respect for Ontario (and our money). Now that they have oil, they don't want to share anymore. Once the country falls apart, the new successor countries will have to start negotiating trade treaties with the US and each other. Their currencies will quickly become worthless. Canada, the country is the envy of the World and enjoys a great deal of respect internationally. The new, tiny countries will have to work hard to make a name for themselves and build up the same level of respect, not mentioning the economic problems. Canada is a G7 nation. Its successors won't be. Chances are, separated and smaller in size, they will become largely invisible. An Alberta passport just won't be the same as our Canadian passport. Anyone who plays with the idea of separatism is too naive to really understand the implications. We have a truly great thing going, why destroy it?

Quebec... yes Quebec. A distinct society. How many of our prime ministers were from Quebec so far? How much money do we give them to stay? Yet they claim they are left out. I'd like to say "if you want to leave, leave, but stop this blackmail!" However... I would like to propose that Hwy 401 and its immediate surroundings remain part of Canada. I am fed up with this nonsense.
United we stand, divided we fall.
Prove it or else it is just propaganda.
If Quebec separates, the East Coast will be cut off and pressured to separate as well. On the other hand... go on and separate. It will be fun to watch all those Quebecois civil servants showing up for work in Ottawa day after day, not understanding why they can't enter the building. It would be a great show if they even went on strike to protest the job losses. Then imagine what happens when they no longer get the transfer payment from Ottawa. All Hell will break lose then. In Quebec that is.
