"Queer" is usually used to insult gays, at least, in my world. I may have to expand my world... :P

Down here they made a big deal of 'claiming' the term and it's used all over the place.

In general, I've observed it's the more militant types who like to use 'queer' and the less militant folks tend to stick with 'gay' or 'GLBT'.

I've also observed that 'queer', as it is used around here, is a collective term for anyone who does not practice heterosexual monogamy. Thus some of the militant pagan polygamists also call themselves queer.

You have militant pagan polygamists?

Brenda @ Wed May 22, 2013 12:40 pm

It's Sacramento. They got e'erytin.

Amazing as it sounds, yes we do!

There's a group of them that meet regularly around town and they're of unspecified faiths (I'm guessing Wiccans, Norse Traditionalists, etc.) and they're pretty in-your-face about their polygamy.

Maybe as many as 30-40 families?

Anyhow, they got on the news here some years back and now they're ignored. The media wants to pretend that all polygamists are of only the Mormon sort and that just isn't the case.

What a crazy world we live in. And also, I think my next band will be called Militant Pagan Polygamists.

The batshit fundies and evangelicals in Florida make the batshit fundies and evangelicals in places like Alabama and Mississippi look sane by comparison.

I don't make this shit up for my own amusement. I know these things about these places because I talk to people from there and read about it on the news. "My daughter is not allowed to be gay!" wouldn't be said by anyone else but a fundie/evangelical, except maybe for a Muslim.

Link? Cause i still haven't found a qoute of the parents saying their daughter wasn't allowed to be gay.

Just to be clear, I think you're probably right about them being fundies, but the way you post these things as if they're fact, and then have nothing to back up your assertions is just irresponsible.

I'm not a journalist, I'm just a guy using a fake name to blather and babble on the internet with other anonymous folks, so I really don't have much of a standard of responsibility to adhere to. As far as I know most of what I say is backed up by other sources, both independently verifiable and anecdotal as well, and that's good enough for me.

I also usually link to reliable sources too, not blogs or op-eds that have been massaged to meet the author's ideology.

We may never find out, due to media bans preventing the name of the underage girl and her parents from being released (even though Anonymous is allegedly on the case and threatening to stir up shit) but if they aren't from an anti-gay religious family I'll eat my hat. No one else except someone with a pre-made gripe against gays, and those kind of people are almost alway religious, would have tried to turn this into something felonious.

That actually sounds pretty good! And your fans would call you MPP for short.

I like it! [B-o]

BTW the Sacramento group of pagan polygamists can be found on Yahoo Groups

You know that will only work if you're sleeping with your bandmates.

So...an 18 year old girl is facing charges of statutory rape because the parents of her girlfriend (who is either 14 or 15) was against the relationship because X. X can stand for homophobia, parents not liking their children having sex with somebody 4 years older than them, parents finding out about the relationship in a really disturbing manner, whatever.

I'm amazed this is a story. The age of consent is 18 in Florida, but those 23 or younger won't be prosecuted with a 16 or 17 year old. The 18 year old probably has heard of the age of consent in Florida, and the concept of "age of consent" isn't exactly complicated. I disagree with the whole "Sex Offender Registry" for statutory rape, but this girl should not be treated any differently than any other person who commits statutory rape, just because she's a lesbian.

I agree. Equal Protection before the law is part of our 14th Amendment to our Constitution and I firmly support it.

If the case can be made that she's just being prosecuted because she's a lesbian then the charges should be dropped.

But if she's being held to the same standard as other people have been held to then the charges should stand.

So if the age of consent is 18, then they both were doing something they could not consent to yesterday (and the past 8, 9 months). No one took it to court yesterday. Today, one turns 18, and now it is an issue?

What do you do with two people who are underage? Do you charge them both?

This is hypocritical to say the least.

I always thought statutory rape laws were there to protect kids under 16 or 18 from 30 year old pervs. Or older. Not from other kids they were in a consensual relationship with for a couple of months until one turned 18.

No, it isn't. The law has drawn a line that says someone over 18 is to be held responsible for their actions. People who are under 18 are not held to that same standard because they're presumed to be unable to act with informed consent.

This is actually a very liberal standard given that in the USA there were no such provisions in law until the late 1800's. Meaning that if a nine year old committed a crime they faced the same penalty as an adult.

It was also in about the same period that some countries in Europe adopted similar measures. Meanwhile, most countries in the world still make no such distinctions and children often end up in adult prisons when they commit even minor crimes.
