How else would you suggest that the police gain control of a situation where the bad guy has a loaded rifle?

The outcome is a given for the one who brings a knife to a gunfight!

We had such a situation, not that long ago. Result 4 dead mounties. Taking pistols to a gun-fight with a rifle wielding perp is not a successful enterprise either.

I have first hand experience with that and, happily, can vouch for the accuracy of that statement.

Colt did not make all men equal---he just changed the criteria.

My favourite involves using the hoplophobes idiology backwards against them.

"The swiftest and most effective way of reducing the number of firearms in public is to disarm the Police. Deaths would be prevented from negligent police use and colateral casualties eliminated. Police firearms are an enormous potential source of illegal firearms. If it saves just one life it is worth it."

Of course, this is faulty logic....but then the notion of completely disarming the public is also faulty logic....

Then there is the Police general attitude that they, and they alone, maintain an exclusive over the use of deadly force.

I have no fear of guns they are fun and blow things to peices . When you are a cop you carry with you alot of self control and predjudice at the same time you are in the thick of everything . Say a swat team has no predjudice just simple protocol .They are not pushed ,prodded, poked at , sworn at, spat at , threatened , pushed ,bled on , puked on , etc etc I can go over to youtube and veiw police brutality all day but not much for the opposite other than a few traffic pullover shootings .

Oh for christs sake!!! you are going to base your assumptions of Officers on Youtube?!?

SWAT members are ONLY called in for intense situations. These are highly skilled in many areas of police work. SWAT members are picked from the best of the best and treat that responsibility with professionalism.

S.W.A.T. is American.

E.R.T. is Canadian.

Of course it isn't shown. Only the "extreme" clips are posted - much like the evening news. How many positive stories do you see each night as compared to the horrific events?

You think that basing your opinion on a few news clips is fair? What you see on the news (and YouTube) is FAR from the entire story.

Thankyou for your statistics BartSimpson . Noone here can really speak with a gun carrying supportive voice until they actually come across an abusive cop, and when you give them the right to be agressive and fail to reduce the odds you are taking big chances in being hurt or even killed yourself . When some of you finally meet that cop you will consciously reveiw your opinion , thats just the way I see it . Some of you just don't know and are guessing and using defensless officer John Does career against the bad guy as a means to condone force, deadly force if he so wishes . Cops are never defenseless just careless at best .

Thank you. I've had several inquiries as to recruiting me to the police forces in several cities including Victoria for the same.

You are most welcome.

And I have met my share of idiot cops and I have friends (most notably my friend Chris who worked for Blackwater in New Orleans - long story) who have had many sad run-ins with thugs wearing badges.

The badge does not make them special but it does seem to put them above the law on a regular basis. :?

Abusive officers is a minority. I work with officers on a daily basis in the poorest neighbourhood in Canada. There have been a few bad ones, but on a whole they care and do their best to be respectful and work for the people. Respect goes both ways.

And saying no one here can speak to the issue is making a very fateful judgment. You do not know history or background of the people on this forum or thread. So far you have based your decision on police by viewing Youtube videos and maybe you have experienced an aggressive officer, we all probably have, but it isnt the majority.

I definitely condone deadly force, When necessary, I think most would. Warning shots and wounding shots is only in the movies.

Freakinoldguy @ Tue Mar 04, 2008 11:34 am

Since we can't control illegal guns, even with an armed police force it kinda sounds to me like the only ones Bob wants to have guns are the criminals.

Now doesn't that just give you a warm fuzzy feeling.

[huh]

Sorry but I watch Treehouse TV lol and I think it would be safe to say that you have an entire lifetime to meet that one cop the odds of meeting him or her is very high .You have to ask the question have you ever met a cop , how many , how many do you think you'll meet over your lifetime , how did you conduct yourself and how did the cop conduct his/herself.

This is not going to happen but if you give cops the right to shoot deliberate J walkers the number of cops shooting citizens will rise just like if you voted for police to shoot pedophiles on the spot ,those numbers would rise too . If you want a police state you have to figure out what is realistic and live with that outcome .

What did you miss in my post. I work on a daily basis, associate on a daily basis and have had many a meeting with officers.

Where did anyone say we are giving officers the right to shoot J walkers or pedophiles on the spot?

You really dont make much sense at all. Run along...Treehouse is calling.
