Cops , Guns and their rights
It seems like there is an endless battle between law keepers and the public , a continuous back and forth exchange of murder or call it killing if you wish . One news artical will discuss the killing of a police officer and then sometime soon after there will by a news artical about a police officer killing or injuring a person . I think anyone who carries a gun in public is dangerous .I don't agree that they will be trained to be responsible enough . Has any independant study ever shown how often a police officers gun has been drawn or if they came very close to using it ? I bet every cop has drawn his/her gun with the intention of using it but thankfully something stopped them . I believe if you give cops too much freedom the majority will use that freedom in the worst way .
Do you feel cops should be allowed to carry guns?
Are you serious?

How else would you suggest that the police gain control of a situation where the bad guy has a loaded rifle?
The outcome is a given for the one who brings a knife to a gunfight!
yes I am serious , why not concentrate on why you oppose ?
I think its a little different if cops are going to a gun battle vs packing one on their body but guns not being the end all ,are we talking about gaining control or gun battles . Do you believe gaining control ensues the use of guns and guns only ?

Gaining control generally entails having the upper hand.
In more cases than not, a gun will give you the upper hand.
Do I want the police officer to have the upper hand over a perp - damn straight, I do. We pay them to protect us. I don't have a problem with the current methods they use to do so.
Furthermore - alternative "weapons" have been provided to them (pepper spray, tasers). When they do choose to use them rather than pull the gun from their holster, they're still questioned, and occasionally reprimanded for doing so. How are they supposed to protect us? Martial arts? Yeah, right....
Hell yes they should carry guns. And they are highly trained, there has been a few bad instances of gun and taser related deaths amongst the police lately. But do you know how many times a police officer gets assaulted and does not return force, because they knew that the person was under the influence or mentally unstable?
Do you know how many lives they have changed for the positive? or how many have died and how many break down after giving a death notice to a family?
Take a ride along with a member and see if they need guns...
If you give cops too much freedom they will abuse their power therefore those things should be strict the stricter the better .
There are places where police do not carry guns and manage just fine. Would you give a transit cop a gun ? Believe me if you give cops enough freedom it will only be a matter of time until they use that power against innocent people .Why does that seem so hard to believe ? I see some people complaining about cops not being giving the right to draw and shoot and infact condoning cops shootng the public for every reason you can imagine lol .

No, the gun is a last resort. Officers dont walk into a situation brandishing their guns. There is an assessment. If the person has a weapon, well that is a different story. Police do try to talk people down, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt. I have seen officers talk someone into dropping a knife, no weapons used. And i have seen police use excessive force and they were reported.
Unfortunately, a gun has to be pulled at times.

Our transit police carry.
Where do you live that the police are shooting the general public? China?

Do your homework.
Evidently, you have no idea how strict the rules are for the members.

I realize how strict the rules are and that is a good thing ,less people will be shot and or abused if it were stricter .
My favourite involves using the hoplophobes idiology backwards against them.
"The swiftest and most effective way of reducing the number of firearms in public is to disarm the Police. Deaths would be prevented from negligent police use and colateral casualties eliminated. Police firearms are an enormous potential source of illegal firearms. If it saves just one life it is worth it."
Of course, this is faulty logic....but then the notion of completely disarming the public is also faulty logic....
Then there is the Police general attitude that they, and they alone, maintain an exclusive over the use of deadly force.

We had such a situation, not that long ago. Result 4 dead mounties. Taking pistols to a gun-fight with a rifle wielding perp is not a successful enterprise either.

I could care less what think on this subject. How about you regale us with what you actually
know?

Here's a couple of facts from Lexis-Nexis to support your premise on one hand and undermine you on the other.
The raw number of US citizens with carry permits who committed firearms offences from 1993 to 2006 is zero. Citizens with carry permits have been convicted of drunk driving and etc. but their firearms were not directly involved in those crimes.
The number of US police officers who committed firearms offences (off duty and on duty) in the same period is 17,865.
Armed citizens are demonstrably harmless to law abiding people.
Armed cops are demonstrably harmful to law abiding people.

Of course. But law abiding citizens need to be able to carry so they can properly defend themselves from criminals and rogue police.
