My brother got sucked into the JW thing. But it's not a cult. It's a pretty serious religion, but it's not like I don't see him anymore, and he's still got money to buy the things he likes. I went to go see Roger Waters (of Pink Floyd) a while back with a bunch of Jay-Dubs and had a whale of a time.

It's just such a bleak relision. It's the Amercian Puritan influence--they fear idoltary above all else, I think, so their places of worship are windowless, dreary affairs. I went to Christchurch Cathedral and St Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin a few years back, as well as Yorkminster in York. I'm not a religious person, but I could almost feel the divine in those places.

I wholly concur. The movement in the USA of the past 30 years is to build churches that better resemble warehouses or sports stadiums and it is sometimes difficult to feel inspired in such places. The cathedral in Koln, Germany was probably the most awesome place I've ever seen and when the orchestra started to play 'The Omnipotence' it was, as you say; divine.

Not only in the US, Bart. Europe has some gorgeous Cathedrals and churches, but also cold buildings that are used as churches...
I used to play an instrument when I was VERY young, and we had a recital in a church. It was a modern building with no charm, no past.

I love old architecture with past and charm...

No ... actually its cult.. it is listed as such in the world religions.
Any so called religion that brainwashes, shuns and has a brotherly underground connection and a head office that you can't access is cult... do some research... there is nothing religious about them.. trust me

Sounds like Catholicism...

I think my all time favorite line from most of these cults is
"we don't believe in a theocracy."

Almost very single group has some lobbyist in government and when you do the research and point this out the response is always the same tired idiotic old line.

"We wouldn't be represented if we didn't vote and act politically according to our faith."

It's always a fun topic to bring up.

Catholics don't brainwash, don't shun their kids, don't solicit and go door to door.
you can visit the Vatican and their financial holdings are public record... so no...not quite the same!

To me a cult cuts you off from your family and takes most of your belongings from you--netiher of which the Jehovah Witnesses do, in my experience. There's a wall there with my brother, sure, but I still see him and we're still family. I may not always like the religion and its weird ways, but that's the choice he made and I respect that.

No offence, but your not exactly Mr. Religious Toleration, so I keep that in mind when I read your opinion of Jehovah Witnesses.

kenmore @ Wed Aug 11, 2010 1:38 pm

Well Zipperfish.. they do cut kids and parents off from families, its called shunning and its done on a regular bases. They also deprive kids from normal social lives by not allowing them to listen or take part in current music or school activities. They do not encourage higher education because they feel it isn't needed because the kingdom is at hand. I have researched and learned alot since my brother got sucked in and if you want the nitty gritty on them and their cultist ways talk to my nephew who was and is being shunned.. I am quite tolerant of religions .. I have strong views of cults and religions that try and shove it down your throat or impose their ideas on you.. I am not asking you to keep any of my views in mind... do your own research or find an x jehovah and get the truth.

Jehovahs have some weirdness, but no more so than Catholics (who share the practice of socializing largely within their faith). I wouldn't say Jehovas fit the definiton of a cult, at least no moreso than any other religion.

Fixed your post to be more inclusive and realistic.

Didn't say there weren't other cults.. just they are one of them!

ShepherdsDog @ Thu Aug 12, 2010 10:50 pm

actually, the JW's are no longer considered a 'cult', but have moved on to be classified as a sect.

Tyler_1 @ Fri Aug 13, 2010 1:00 pm

Once I said "I'm sorry I can't let you in the gate, my dog eats people I don't know."

One spring one poor lady in a really pretty outfit slipped in the icy mud and ended up sliding right under my husbands truck. 8O That was really something
