Majority of Americans Pro Life: Gallup Poll

Fifty-one percent of Americans consider themselves "pro-life," the first time a majority of the country has stated a personal objection to abortion since Gallup polls began tracking the data 15 years ago.

The numbers correspond with FOX News polls this month showing 49 percent of Americans as pro-life and 43 percent as pro-choice on abortion. Last year the numbers were essentially the reverse of the current findings: 41 percent were pro-life and 49 percent were pro-choice in September 2008.

The Gallup poll released Friday also marks a massive shift from one year ago, when 50 percent of Americans called themselves pro-choice, and just 44 percent said they were pro-life. Today 42 percent say they are pro-choice, by far the lowest level of support for abortion ever measured by the Gallup poll.

This brightened my day! Very positive news. Obama's moves of late to fund abortions in other countries, and punish medical practitioners who don't perform abortions, is backfiring as the population shifts away from what it means to be 'Pro Choice' and backs the 'Pro Life' position.

I think the term pro life is deceiving. I'm sure even women that have had abortions are pro life. It's not something that someone enjoys.

Absolutely correct. I am pro-life but I would not let my views on the subject dictate what someone else does with their body and I do not pretent do know or judge those who make a choice of what they do with their body.

Furthermore if it were my partner or loved one making either choice I would support their decision either way.

I think if you support and understand a woman who needs to make that choice she will make the right choice every time. It may not be life in every case but either way she deserves the support and understanding.

Pro life means just that.. to be pro life one has to be against abortion, birth control, taking someone off life support and having sex only for pro-creation.. there is no middle ground and there is no choice.. If you profess to being pro life then you can't say you agree with it but its ok for someone else to have an abortion etc...

That's not always true. Some people who are "pro-life" because they would not have an abortion themselves, but think others should have the choice if it's necessary.

I would like to know what kinds of questions were asked in this poll, because I have a feeling a lot of them were skewed to make the pollee answer in a way that might not actually reflect their views.

What really offends me is when a parade of anti-abortion nuts fills the streets of my city, and most of them aren't women. A good portion of them were old men belonging to some fraternity that wears capes in public. These are the same sorts of people who sit in front of abortion clinics every single day, spouting religious nonsense.

Pro life seems a stupid description for a people that make war as often as they do. :?

I would bet serious money the poll questions are skewed for the purpose of obtaining a “pro-life” result.

My wife and I were driving through Abbotsford a couple of years ago when the religious nuts were out lining the main drag, hand in hand. As you said, mostly men and young children who couldn’t possibly know why they were even there. A whole new generation being brainwashed.

I’d hate to think we as a society would seriously consider a step back into the dark ages.

Mr_Canada Mr_Canada:
"Pro-Life" is misleading. Since many people who call themselves "Pro-Life" are totally all for the Death penalty.

That may be, but if you call them anti-abortionists, they take offense for some reason. Seems they think it has a negative nuance.

"Pro-Bible" is more fitting and truthful.

Every religion has similar views on this topic. Good job singling out Christianity.

Would you say the same about the Torah and the Koran?

I am, of course, pleased by this progress. I am also fairly sure that people generally understand what is meant by the terms "pro-life" and "pro-choice", so these arguments on semantics are rather foolish.
