Happy? How do you know? And does it really matter?

As part of the long standing quest towards the wusification of Canada we are constantly told to be happy from the cancer wards with their fake cheeriness to the no fault divorce advocates who believe "quality time" is a replacement for 'quantity time' to the army of grief counselors there to set you straight, racing to beat the cops, every time something traumatic happens.

Seems all this quest for happiness has left us Canadians with is an even greater miserable outlook.

I personally envy all those of any religious faith who have experienced the bliss, security and peace that comes from knowing your God(s), your purpose and your future.

Kinda goes against everything his article suggests, eh?

Not at all.

Everybody is dutifully looking for happiness as our secular society demands and permeates from pop culture to the education system. As you've ironically pointed out, those who seem happiest are the ones who've found God and personal salvation/redemption.

That is because the mind is a mysterious thing to waste.

“It is better to be a human being dissatisfied than a pig satisfied; better to be Socrates dissatisfied than a fool satisfied. And if the fool, or the pig, are of a different opinion, it is because they only know their own side of the question.”

– John Stuart Mill

Religion is a cult of people making themselves happy with how little they know.

I can see how you would draw that conclusion when Blue Nose is involved in the debate.

But I want to point out this is not about religion but rather the failure of society to be as happy as it 's so desparetly tried to attain.

Why?

TattoodGirl @ Sat Jun 23, 2007 4:03 pm

I personally like being happy....Alot of people ask me why I am always laughing and seem happy....I just love life, it could be the shittiest day of all time but I will find something in it to make me happy....people have to come to realize that they are the only ones that can make themselves happy, it is not the responsibilities of others...If you arent happy about something, change it, do something about it, dont let it drag you into misery.

Still looking, I guess.

Perhaps they have the definition of happiness confused.....it is my experience that only a fortunate few know where to look for it.

I must be missing something that only you can see.

I am neither old, crotchety, nor religious. However, age has nothing to do with happiness.

IMO...I think people arent happy because they base their happiness in Monetary and material possessions. People also dont take enough time to spending time with just themselves....alone by a beach or wherever they feel relaxed....spending time getting to know WHO they are. I think people are afraid of looking deep inside and finding out what makes them unhappy...It means you may need to change something in yourself, which is the scariest realization. I dont know....maybe some people are just born happy and others are destined to spend their lives in a constant state of unhappiness.

Nah, I disagree as that always seems to be the fall back crutch but studies actually prove that the wealthier you are generally the happier you are.

PDT_Armataz_01_37

This is actually very possible and an almost brilliant deduction I've never considered before. With all the mass entertainment out there from TV to the internet maybe we never really spend time with our thoughts any more.

Of course.

The secret is in the ability to suppress the gage reflex.
