This is probably the earliest form of mental programing. Although the intention of believing in a higher power to off set the miseries of day to day living (especially back in history) these beliefs today are used as a tool to control the masses.

Sometimes I do wonder.
My position is that the clergy/priesthood are the oldest profession.
They predate any "civilization" and were/are present in primitive hunting/gathering societies which lack(ed) a warrior caste or protistutes.

Everything you say here, is generalization, and therefor I don't buy it.
Of course people make decisions based on what they are taught and what they have experienced, but it doesn't necessarily mean they make the same decisions their parents or grandparents made.
