Hi Everyone!

I plan to make a trip to Western Canada this summer

I am visiting my sister in Qu'appelle, Saskatchewan

I plan to visit friends and relatives, by car, to the following locations:

Humboldt, Sask.
Edmonton, Alta.
Calgary, Alta.
and Kelowna, B.C.

I have never been west of Sask, and want to see some nice scenery during my drive. My wife has never been west of ontario.

I was hoping maybe everyone here can help me find the best roads to travel to the locations I have mentioned earlier. Maybe some good places to stop for the night, good resturants, and other things to look for

I have also been told to visit the Glaciers and Drumheller ( I think I have spelled it correctly)

Any help or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

By the way, this will be done from July 26 to 4 August

I'd stay on the Trans Canada highway as Regina is near Qu'appelle while Humboldt is near Saskatoon where you'll have to take the number 5. Keep taking the Trans Canada until you hit Medicine Hat for a rest or something. Keep taking the number 1 to Calgary. Move north to Edmonton. Back the way you came to Lethbridge, keep moving west until you hit Kelowna. Easy as pie.

Just don't be board from the view of the prairies until you hit the mountains.

Can any of you give me an idea how much time it would take me to go to these different places?

Edmonton to Drumheller?

Drumheller to calgary?

Calgary to Kelowna?

Which ways are the most scenic, especially of the mountains?

I am bringing a digital camera and a video recorder of this drive.

Any suggestions?

I'm probably estimating here but anyone else can correct.

$1:
Edmonton to Drumheller?

You go the Camrose route, probably an hour and a half to 2hrs.
$1:
Drumheller to calgary?

30-45 minutes. Maybe less.
$1:
Calgary to Kelowna?

I'm guesstimating...3 hours. Maybe less.

Can't get more scenic than going across the Rocky Mountains. Once you're in BC, Mountains galore will await you.

The first mountains you will see is the Livingstone range in Alberta.

There's 2 more ranges before you hit the high and tight BC mountains which you can only drive through to get to the coast. Not much else to do,she's full bush and you cant even hike through most of it.

Pretty scenery though.

So says the mountain man.

I think Calgary to Kelowna would be closer to 5 or 6 hours. At least the way I drive. There are some sections in the mountain where you have to really slow down. It's a beautifull drive though. I never get sick of the scenery.

Kelowna is right near the Trans Canada highway so I think 5 or 6 hours is a touch much, more like 2-3 hours possibly more and Calgary is already near the mountains anyways. Thats just me, doesn't make you wrong.

I've always went the Cranbrook route from Lethbridge so I could be wrong.

Actually the Trans Canada is about two hours drive from Kelowna, and 5 hours is how long it took me to drive from Vernon to Calgary. And Vernon is about 45k farther away from Calgary than Vernon is.

Salmon Arm to Kelowna is not 2 hours. I've driven from Calgary to Kelowna in under 3 and half hours. People have their own driving preferences. Whether or not they obey the minimum highway speed is their perogative.

You're right that mountains are a factor. Pardon me.

OK maybe Salmon Arm is 1 and a half hours from Kelowna, close enough and I also specified that it took me about 5 hours to drive to Kelowna, I realize not everyone drives as safely as I do. Since Kelowna is 600 Km's from Calgary I'm curious how fast you were going in order to make it in less than 3.5 hours?

Tman1 @ Sat Jun 03, 2006 10:03 pm

Sorry, you're right Ruez. I didn't factor in the mountains. My apologies. I always take other routes and seemed to take less time. You are right, I am wrong.

P.S - Driving safely is good.

I'll call bullshit on that one buddy. No way....not a chance....not even in a ferrari.
#1 or #3,it's all mountains and unless your in a lear jet there's no way you will make it in anything under 6 hours.....I dont care if your doing 200 mph,it's impossible.

Tman1 @ Sat Jun 03, 2006 10:29 pm

Nothing is impossible. What bullshit were you reffering to?
