since it was obligatory attendance, they should be considered on duty. that makes it harassment. next time something like this comes up the blue flu may make rounds.

What if they just received such comments from bystanders while attending a false fire alarm?

Their employeer can't control what non-employees say.

The firemen shouldn't have been forced to attend the parade.

Taunts and jeers, etc. at work probably constitute sexual harassment.

Taunts at the parade... I'm not so sure, since they claimed the taunts made them uncomfortable. Without knowing exactly what happened at the parade, I can't say for sure if it's harassment or not.

Nor can anyone else.

R=UP

Perhaps in your search of my posts in this thread you discovered I've been saying that all along?

I caught this, but you're still off on who determines what is an uninvited or unwelcomed personal comment.

The recipient of the comment makes this judgment and no one else.

A Gay Pride parade compares to the average false fire alarm call how?

I can't go to HR and lodge a complaint that someone complimented my dress and expect that person to be reprimanded.

If the comment was uninvited or unwelcomed for any reason of yours then yes, you can.

Oh, I can lodge the complaint, but there has to be some substance behind it for it to be taken seriously.

Yes, you have to state that you were offended by the comment. That's substance enough under the law.

lily lily:
If someone got reprimanded for such a comment, you can be sure it wasn't an isolated incident - that HR looked into the complaint and saw it as part of a pattern of behaviour by the person who made the comment.

Possibly. At the same time yours might be the first complaint and why should your valid complaint be dismissed if it is just the first?

Granted, I would probably not fire someone over such a comment (depending on the severity of the comment) if it was their first offence, but I would definitely admonish them against making similar comments to *anyone* in the work place in the future.

I can assure you that in just these kind of situations I have not allowed a third offence.

A second offence was always enough to get you sent back to whence you came with me.

You have to interact with the general public.

A false fire call isn't "sexually charged". Doesn't even compare.

If this situation were reversed and a group of gay males were treated so appallingly you'd see every media outlet in the West screaming for blood. I can empath regarding how these men must of felt like and frankly it's a blight on the gay communities reputation for acting like a bunch of horney pigs. Shameful and disrespectful to the extreme.

Forcing Government workers to pander to a minority group who wants a parade because of whom they have sex with is beyond Poltical Correct it's Poltical Suicide. Main stream society is tired of the Gay Community acting like they are Speciallllllllllllllllll. They aren't their gay, so what blah blah blah. They are equal in Canada, that means they are part of us normals. It's not like they are retarded and in need of special training to survive, it's SEXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXxxx.

Jet boy you are speaking out of both sides of your mouth, first you complain about the foul and abusive treatment by straights towards gays at your school and then you have the adacity to shrug off the SEXUAL ABUSE hurled at straight men forced to participate in a gay pride parade. Then you become a hypocrite by stating it's "Sexually Charged" excuse me it's suppose to be a parade not a horn dog fest. What now gays can't control their sexuality? I thought being proud of being gay was about Diversity not sexual electricity. Perhaps you should CC the gay leaders and find out what the real agenda is these days. You have equality isn't that enough, do we hetros hold a parade? NO, because sex belongs in the bedroom not on our streets or our parks or our schools.

Enough with this I'm special shit already, it's sex. We all do it, after marrage of course-cough cough. Can't talk when choking.

If the firefighters were harassed at the parade, how is that any different from if they get harassed while on a call?

A spectator spewing crap is a spectator spewing crap, regardless of the surroundings.

Yes....considering they were told they HAD to attend this parade...something I don't agree with at all, and you know I fully support GBLT. This was an infringment on THEIR rights, and the fact that they were also sexually harrased.......well...... the book should be thrown at the cheif for pushing HER agenda on them.

Personally I woulda told the boss to shove it and if I got disiplined Id see em in court.

I just can't imagine one of my bosses having the stones and the poor judgment to tell me to go to one of these things.

They HAVE to go an a call.... they were FORCED to go to the parade, something that Im pretty sure is NOT part of their job description.

If a "spectator" makes a comment while theyre on the job... well that happens (alot from what my buddy tells me) but even Jetboy admits the parade was "sexually charged" and they were, in their opinion, harassed.

Personally I woulda told the boss to shove it and if I got disiplined Id see em in court.

If I had been in their position that's exactley what I would have told her.....actually..... since she made it mandatory.... I probably would have told her to stuff it even though I do support GBLT.

No you wouldn't. If the situation was truly reversed, meaning the firemen were talking like that to these very gay men then, they'd gleem in the attention.

Scrappy Scrappy:

There's a difference between saying...

1) I hate you disgusting gross faggot. I'm going to kill kick your ass.

and...

2) I love you. I think you're so hot and I like you a lot!

Scrappy Scrappy:
Then you become a hypocrite by stating it's "Sexually Charged" excuse me it's suppose to be a parade not a horn dog fest.

Me a hypocrite for saying gay pride parades are sexually-charged amongst some of its attendees? LOL, OK, whatever you say.

Scrappy Scrappy:

I hate to admit, some can't, no, neither can some straight men. Some men can be pervs, straight or gay. You should have seen this table of men sexually harassing the cute female waitress earlier tonight at the pub I was at. If that were gay men doing that to a straight male waiter, it would be a whole different story. Talk about hypocrisy.

Even then, I'm a good-looking guy and have been to more gay pride parades than I can count and never once have I had someone there come onto me. There must have been a few out-spoken gay men that day with a fireman fetish.

Oh fucking get over it. I already explained in previous posts why we have gay pride and if you don't like gay pride parades, or any parade for that matter, don't attend.
