Straight Firefighters Forced to Attend Gay Pride Parade
Omega @ Wed Aug 08, 2007 8:28 pm
Well, as a gay person who loves gay pride parades, I have to say that it's wrong to force people to march in any parade they don't want to. They might be intolerant bigoted firemen, but it's their right. Not only that, us gay people don't want anyone miserable being there. The parades are supposed to be fun and happy... and completely voluntary.
However, if I was that fire chief, I may have made the same mistake, especially if the firemen only voiced their disapproval after the fact. The fire hall was on the parade route and they have participated for 15 years without a complaint. The firemen that were scheduled to do it cancelled at the last minute, leaving them with nobody to drive the truck and wave.

Whoa don't jump on that soap box, not wanting to participate does not make them intolerant bigots. If they wanted the parade banned ok fine you would have a point. I'm straight couldn't care of someone is gay, bi that is their lifestyle. Yet, I would still be uncomfortable participating.

They are intolerant because they didn't want to go to a gay parade? Amazing. I'm intolerant too I guess.
I'm sorry, but I have to take issue with this:
Brenda Brenda:
Ban the damned parades, ban the "gay-lympics". You might be gay, you're not special. Well, just as special as I am.
That would be a violation of human rights. Then again, you did use the word 'fags'. Not that that offends me but it is usually said in a derogatory way. Do you support homosexuals having less rights than heterosexuals, or do you just want everyone to give up their right to protest and assemble peacefully?

It's not really a violation of human rights.

It is, however, a violation of
civil rights. You cannot ban people from gathering because you don't think they're special enough.

They can gather. But having a parade is a stretch cause it causes disruption and shuts down part of the city. If they wanted to book a center or something then have at 'er.

No, of course not, but they were more than just uncomfortable. Truly tolerant people wouldn't have had a problem with it.

I'm not following. What do you mean by "more than just uncomfortable"?

I have a problem seeing almost naked guys, and there is something wrong with me?

They were humiliated, embarrassed, and offended . At least that’s what one of them said in a statement. We have a big Sikh parade in my area every year and while I don't agree with their religion I'm certainly not offended by it.
