I think that every cop should have to start the conversation by giving their rank, name, and badge number. They are the ones instigating the contact, so they should have to go first. This cop seems like a major power tripping dick.

I agree the cop comes off as a dick, but police in Canada have had the authority since December 2018to request a breathalyzer at EVERY traffic stop they make, whether or not they suspect you've been drinking.

$1:
Mandatory alcohol screening

Police officers can demand that any lawfully-stopped driver provide a preliminary breath sample to test for alcohol without reasonable suspicion that the driver has alcohol in their body.

In this case, the cop uses it as intimidation and a way to stack up charges on the driver, who came off as a bit of an asshole himself. That certainly doesn't justify what happened, but the driver didn't do himself any favours by being belligerent.

Toronto police more likely to use force against people of colour, data suggests

$1:
Toronto police are more likely to use force against people of colour, especially Black residents, according to race-based data released this week.

The internal data on use of force and strip searches from 2020 also showed Indigenous people were, proportionally, more likely than any other racial group to be strip-searched after being arrested.

Some academics, journalists and activists have been saying for decades that systemic racism is a problem in policing.

Akwasi Owusu-Bempah, a researcher and sociologist at the University of Toronto, talks to Frontburner about the need for more transparency from police forces across the country on race-based data, and ultimately, more accountability for systemic racism in policing.

Edmonton police officer demoted for lying about firearms gear, will participate in new 'off ramp' program

Edmonton police have demoted an officer who lied about a non-regulation piece of equipment, ordering him to participate in a new “off ramp” program open to some officers charged with disciplinary offences.

Const. Thomas Woitt, a seven-year member of the Edmonton Police Service, pleaded guilty this spring to a single count of deceit under the Police Act.

At issue was Woitt’s decision to use a “fast” magazine pouch during a March 13, 2021, timed shooting competition that was part of the application process for the police service’s tactical section. Woitt repeatedly changed his story about where he acquired the pouch, initially claiming the EPS firearms training unit issued it to him. He eventually admitted he bought the item himself.

Unlike EPS-issue magazine pouches, the fast or “open top” pouch does not include a flap that snaps closed over the magazine, making it easier for the user to reload their weapon. Woitt acknowledged this gave him an advantage over the other candidates.

These things don't even surprise me anymore. We've heard all the stories about how male police officers treat their female counterparts, why would it be different with civilian women.
