Fewer Canadians to visit US in the future
Banff Banff:
I don't travel there very often anyway because there is just far too much about Canada which is awesome to find the time to visit the US.
I totally agree. Canada is full of incredible places and most Canadians go through their entire lives without ever knowing those places exist. I have travelled a few times in the states, but I much prefer it in Canada....
Last time I was in the states some cop almost pulled their gun on me...lol
The only reason I can see for going to the states is in the dead of winter where everywhere in Canada is either freezing or wet (Vancouver)....I love our winters, but I can understand how some people need a break during a really long one.....
I'm sorry, but I see that as an almost provincial attitude. I've been from coast to coast to coast in Canada, seen about half of the continental US, Hawaii, Alaska and have been to Africa, Australia, Asia and a lot of Ocenia. Everyone should take the opportunity to travel and experience the world. since 1984, except for getting my Ed degree and Engineering degree(summers were spent overseas working while I did my Engineering degree)and a few years here and there, I've lived and travelled outside of Canada.

Just curious, how difficult is it to get a passport in Canada? I know here in the states its just a matter of sending a copy of your birth certificate, getting some pics taken, and filling out a little paperwork. Fairly quick and painless and its good for 10 years.
At least this doesnt go into effect until next year. Maybe it will be repealed by then.
It takes a bit of work. You need two major pieces of ID (Birth certificate, SIN), you need verification that you are, in fact, you from two legal sources (doctor, lawyer, etc), and then you need $80 to pay for it.
you'd think the Americans were proposing giving everyone a full body cavity search at the border, Its only a passport ffs. Try moving around anyWHERE outside North America without a passport and see how many borders you get across.

What about the European Union?

most Canadians....Maybe its just the people I know, but most of them haven't seen a whole of our country. And when they do, all they see is the tourist bars in the big cities.

I predict that a path will be cleared for Canadians. Remember, we Americans were getting battered by some of your Canadian politicians. Harper seems to be someone we can talk to. O.K., some American politicians were a little impolite also.
The 2010 Winter Olympics will create a lot of traffic from the U.S.. The demand for border traffic will increase dramatically, not decrease. We Americans need to learn a lesson in trusting Canadians totally and Canadians need to work closely on security and drug running issues with Americans (which is probably already happening).
What we need is solid identification that is difficult to forge. I think we can work that out. Tightening the border is the wrong direction to go.
Oh how amusing. Ignorance is really scary, don't you think? Where do you think those terrorists come from? Americans only just want to tighten the border security, and nothing else. Besides, what's the big deal with carrying a passport anyway?
Canada is not as capitalistic as the U.S. but the Canadians still can afford to buy a passport, am I right so far?
And what is a solid identification by the way? And what's the DIFFERENCE between your solid ID and tightening the border?

Aren't you calling the kettle black on that one, Yank?
And do you believe that terrorists entered America via Canada? I'm curious.

YankGreat... Get a clue, Canadians are the best friends we have on the planet. Yes, we may be a little worried about terrorist crossing our border but the bald truth is many more just fly in direct to the U.S. because we are too business-greedy to set up real security. Instead we take fingernail files away from old women - just insane.
We have a little problem with Canada because they are more lax on marijuana, but we are more lax on guns. These are not hair-on-fire issues, but should be attended to co-operatively.
Just think about really trusting Canadians with a totally open border. It would be in the interest of both countries. The terrorist caught us all off guard... and we will all raise our guard.
We do need most excellent identification, drivers licenses are not suitable anymore. We will get there.
BTW - on 9-11, when we had to get all of our planes out of the air, many landed in Canada on very short notice. Thank you Canada!

Finally, an American who sees the light on both sides of the issue!
Great post dude.
Also, tightening the border could slow the flow of trade. And the American government has looked into the option of building fences along the Canadian border.....Funny.............

ID that is not easily forged. You need to prove who you are and where you come from. Cheaper than a passport. Perhaps with radio tag capabilities for fast passage. Actually, I do believe in a national ID. I think we have a right to privacy but not to anonymity.
I think boarder security will have little affect on real terrorists and hardcore professional criminals who want to cross. It will only affect casual boarder crossers, or criminals of opportunity who won't work hard to get across......
There are lots of rivers, huge farms, forests, mountains, etc....where someone can cross.....Even if a wall is built across the entire continent you would need like 2,000,000 guards to effectively watch that no one climbs it....
How hard is it to sail a boat from Vancouver to Seatle and get off in some remote beach......People sail their boats from their homes on coastal cities to their cottages in coastal areas all the time.....I think it would be pretty easy.....
