Nor do I, you would obviously win :wink:

When it comes to children and poverty, you are right, it is all bad. The difference being, Canada is not known as a third world nation, and the poverty numbers keep rising every year, that is a known and published fact each year. That is Canada wide, not just Alberta.

$1:
BadAssBookie

money is already promised for the fires.

That money came from funds that were going to BC already.

BadAssBookie @ Tue Sep 16, 2003 9:52 pm

How so?

Canuck_105 @ Tue Sep 16, 2003 9:59 pm

They give the provinces $X amount every year. Say X=$100 million. Instead of giving a total of $120 million, the total would remain at $100 million, but $20 million would have to go to the fires.

The facts on costs and compensation for recent disasters:

Toronto tourism lost $190 million from SARS, Vancouver lost $57 million, Montreal $33 million, Calgary $13 million, and Ottawa $700,000. In addition there are other costs which the Ontario Gov estimates at $2 Billion. The federal Gov has offered $250 million in compensation in addition to the $3.5 million contributed for the concert.

Mad Cow losses have now totaled almost $1 billion with the feds offering up to $190 million. 80% of Canadian beef comes from the West.

Softwood lumber losses have reached more than $1.5 billion, over half being in BC, and 75% in the West. So far the feds have offered $10 million to BC, I couldn't find for other provinces.

The forest fires in BC have destroyed an estimated $7.5 billion in lumber while costs of fighting them will come to $490 million more then the $55 million budgeted. As previously stated, no extra money has been given as compensation.

Eastern Totals:
Costs=$2.7487 billion
Compensation=$291.5 million

Western Totals:
Costs=$10.035 billion
Compensation=$162

I would also like to point out that across Canada tourism will continue to suffer and those costs, as well as those for mad cow and softwood lumber continue to rise.

Much like many statistics this is bunk. You cannot use 7.5B as a "lost" total. In addition, most of the "lumber" was government owned - what are you going to do - have the government reemburse itself?? In addition, you haven't calculated the losses in Ontario, Quebec or the Maritimes from softwood or madcow correctly.

Third, you have only used special, specific interests. Try using a more accurate, broader gauge like transfers per capita and then tell me what you come up with.
